Flashcard
A flashcard is a small card with a question on one side and the answer on the other. You look at the question, try to remember the answer, then flip the card to check. It is one of the simplest and best ways to drill facts into memory.

Flashcards work because they make you pull the answer out of your own head instead of just reading it. That act of trying to remember is what builds a strong memory. Re-reading your notes feels productive, but it does not stick the same way. When you blank on a card, you also learn exactly what you still need to study.
They get even stronger when you space them out. Review a card the day after you make it, then a few days later, then a week later. The cards you keep getting right come up less, and the hard ones come up more.
The common mistake is making cards that are too big. If one card asks you to recall a whole paragraph, you cannot really test yourself. Keep each card to one small idea, one question, one answer.

Mia is studying for her biology exam. She makes a card that says "What does the mitochondria do?" on the front and "makes energy for the cell" on the back. She goes through her deck on the bus, flipping each card to check her answer.

How many flashcards should I make for one topic?
Make one card per fact you actually need to recall, not one per page. A typical lecture might give you ten to thirty good cards. If a card has a long answer, split it into two smaller cards so each one tests a single thing.
Are flashcards better than just re-reading my notes?
Yes, for memorising facts they usually are. Re-reading feels easy but it does not force your brain to recall anything. Flashcards make you retrieve the answer, which is what builds lasting memory. Spacing the reviews out over days makes them even stronger.
