Quizlet alternatives and apps like Quizlet (2026)
The best Quizlet alternative depends on what you want to keep. Knowt is the closest free copy. Anki has the strongest spaced repetition and costs nothing outside the iPhone. Brainscape and RemNote bring their own review styles. Gizmo and StudyPDF build cards from your own files, and Kahoot suits live class games. Prices are as of October 2026.
People leave Quizlet for three main reasons. Some tools, such as practice tests, are capped on the free plan. They want cards made from their own slides instead of searching other students' sets. Or they want a scheduler that decides what to review next.
The tools below fall into four groups: Quizlet-style apps (Knowt), flashcard apps built on spaced repetition (Anki, Brainscape, RemNote), AI tools that build material from your files (Gizmo, StudyPDF) and live quiz games (Kahoot). Pick the group first, then the app. We checked free tiers and prices on each vendor's site on 14 October 2026. They change often.

The options
Knowt
Best for: Switching from Quizlet and keeping the same feel
Knowt is the closest match to Quizlet: flashcards, a Learn mode, practice tests and notes, plus AI that turns PDFs, videos and lectures into study material. Its site says flashcards and Learn mode are not behind a paywall.
Strengths
- Familiar flashcard and Learn flow, so there is little to relearn
- Free Basic plan covers flashcards and the study modes
- Notes and AI summaries live in the same app
Limits
- Ad-free studying and the extra AI tools need the paid Ultra plan
- Ultra costs more than Brainscape Pro or RemNote Pro
Anki
Best for: Remembering for months with the deepest spaced repetition
Anki is a free, open-source flashcard program built around spaced repetition. It schedules each review for the moment you are most likely to forget the card, and add-ons extend it.
Strengths
- Free on desktop and Android, with free AnkiWeb sync
- Add-ons and public shared decks from a large community
- Full control over card design and review settings
Limits
- Steeper to learn than Quizlet, and you make or import the cards yourself
- The iPhone and iPad app is a paid purchase
Brainscape
Best for: Simple confidence-based review of flashcards
Brainscape is a flashcard app where you rate how well you knew each card from 1 to 5, and it repeats weak cards sooner. It also offers a library of expert-certified decks.
Strengths
- A one-tap confidence rating drives the schedule
- Large library of certified and community decks
- Free plan includes spaced repetition and progress tracking
Limits
- Flashcards only: no practice exams, study guides or mind maps
RemNote
Best for: Taking notes and making flashcards in one place
RemNote is a note-taking app with flashcards built in. You write notes, mark what to remember, and it schedules the reviews.
Strengths
- Notes and flashcards live in one linked workspace
- Spaced repetition built in
- PDF annotation and image occlusion, with a small allowance on Free
Limits
- More to set up than a pure flashcard app
- Heavy AI use needs Pro with AI (20,000 credits a month)
Gizmo
Best for: Fast AI flashcards and quizzes from notes, PDFs and videos
Gizmo is an AI study app that turns notes, PDFs, slides and YouTube videos into flashcards and quizzes. It shows up in many lists of Quizlet alternatives.
Strengths

- Tracks progress per concept, so you see what to review next
- PDF export on every plan, Anki (.apkg) and Word on Pro and up
Limits
- Weekly caps on every plan
- No library of ready-made decks from other students
Kahoot
Best for: Live quiz games in class or with a group
Kahoot! is a game-based quiz tool. A host runs a live quiz and players join with a PIN. It fits a classroom or a study group more than solo revision.
Strengths
- Live games with a leaderboard for groups
- Free plan includes flashcards and solo games
- Offline mode on every plan
Limits
- Built for hosts and teachers, not for scheduled solo revision
- The free plan caps the number of players per game
How to choose
- Want the same feel as Quizlet, for free? Start with Knowt.
- Want to remember for months and care most about the scheduler? Use Anki. Only the iPhone app costs money, once.
- Want notes and cards in one app? Try RemNote. Want a plain 1 to 5 rating? Try Brainscape.
- Want cards made from your own slides and PDFs? Run one of your own files through Gizmo and StudyPDF before you pay anyone.
- Moving existing sets or studying with a group? Check each app's importer first. Kahoot runs live games, and a StudyPDF course can be shared by link.
