The best NotebookLM alternatives in 2026

The best NotebookLM alternative depends on what you used it for. To chat with your own files, try ChatGPT Projects, Claude Projects or Perplexity. For notes and flashcards, RemNote. For saved articles and videos, Recall. For studying a course with cited answers, quizzes and exams, StudyPDF. NotebookLM's audio overviews are a real strength, and StudyPDF has no audio.

NotebookLM is Google's tool for asking questions about your own sources. In July 2026 Google renamed it Gemini Notebook. It is the same product at the same web address, and most people still search for it as NotebookLM. This page uses both names.

People look for an alternative for a few reasons: the daily caps on chats and audio overviews, a wish to pick the AI themselves, a workflow outside Google, or a need to practise and be tested instead of only reading and asking. NotebookLM does a lot well. Audio overviews, sources from Google Drive and a free plan with 50 sources per notebook are real reasons to stay.

The six tools below cover the usual reasons for leaving. Facts come from each vendor's own site, checked in October 2026. Prices change, so check the current one before you pay.

The options

ChatGPT Projects

Best for: Chatting with your files next to everything else you do in ChatGPT

A ChatGPT project keeps chats, files and custom instructions in one workspace. It answers from your files and from the model's general knowledge, so it covers study questions and everything else.

Strengths

  • Projects work on the free plan
  • Files and instructions stay attached to every chat in the project
  • One tool for study questions, writing and general help

Limits

  • A general chat tool: no course map, no mastery tracking, no graded exams
  • Answers can mix your files with general knowledge, so check them against your slides
Official site

Claude Projects

Best for: Working through long readings with your own instructions

A Claude project holds your files as a knowledge base and your instructions for how Claude should answer. On paid plans, a retrieval mode stretches how much project knowledge fits.

Strengths

  • Projects are included on the free plan
  • Custom instructions apply to every chat in the project
  • Retrieval mode on paid plans handles a large knowledge base

Limits

  • Sharing a project is limited to Team and Enterprise plans
  • No flashcard, quiz or exam builder, and no progress tracking
Official site

Perplexity Projects

Best for: Research that needs the web as well as your own files

Perplexity renamed Spaces to Projects in July 2026. A project keeps files, instructions and threads in one place and can be shared with other people.

Strengths

  • Good when a question needs web sources as well as your files
  • Shared projects with owner, edit and view roles
  • Existing Spaces moved over to Projects automatically

Limits

  • No built-in practice loop: no graded exams or per-topic mastery
  • File uploads are limited on the free plan
Official site

RemNote

Best for: Notes and spaced-repetition flashcards in one app

RemNote combines an outliner for notes with spaced-repetition flashcards, PDF annotation and an exam scheduler. The top plan adds AI flashcards, quizzes and summaries from a PDF.

Strengths

  • Notes and flashcards live in the same document
  • Image occlusion and an exam scheduler on Pro
  • AI flashcards, quizzes and summaries from a PDF on the AI plan

Limits

  • Most AI features sit on the highest plan
  • You build and organise the notes yourself, which takes setup time
Official site

Recall

Best for: Saving articles, videos and PDFs into a searchable library

Recall saves what you read and watch, summarises it and links your notes into a knowledge graph. Plus adds personal AI chat and quizzes with spaced repetition. Max lets you choose the AI model.

Strengths

  • Browser extensions make saving from the web quick
  • Quizzes with spaced repetition and a text-to-speech Listen Mode on Plus
  • Max lets you pick the AI model

Limits

  • Built for a reading library, not one course: no exam mode or mastery by topic
  • The free plan stops at 10 AI summaries a month
Official site

StudyPDF

That's us

Best for: Studying a whole course from your own files, with practice

StudyPDF splits your files into topics and concepts and builds flashcards, quizzes, practice exams, study guides, cheat sheets, summaries and mind maps from them. Bo, the tutor, answers from your material and cites the page.

Strengths

  • Answers cite the page of your PDF or the second of your video
  • Mastery is tracked per concept, so the next quiz targets your gaps
  • Reads scans, handwriting and photos; PDF export on every plan, Word and Anki on Pro and up

Limits

  • No audio overviews
  • Weekly caps on every plan, and a free account is needed
  • Built for studying, not for general research or writing

How to choose

  • Stay with NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook) if audio overviews or your Google Drive files are the point. StudyPDF has no audio, and no tool here copies it.
  • Want to pick the AI or keep one workspace for everything? ChatGPT Projects, Claude Projects and Perplexity Projects hold your files next to your other chats.
  • Want notes and flashcards you build yourself? RemNote. Want a library of saved articles and videos? Recall.
  • Need to pass one exam from your lectures? Pick a tool that tests you: cited answers, quizzes, graded practice exams and a view of your weak topics. That is the job StudyPDF is built for.
  • Check limits before you commit. File caps, AI credits and weekly caps differ by tool, and prices change.
How StudyPDF helps

Study from your own material

If you used NotebookLM to read your lectures, StudyPDF takes the same files further. Upload slides, PDFs, scans or a YouTube link. Bo answers from them and cites the page. The New material button builds flashcards, quizzes, practice exams and study guides, and your results show which concepts are weak. There is no audio. The free plan needs an account, no card.

Questions and answers

Is NotebookLM still called NotebookLM?

No. Google renamed it Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026. It is the same product at the same web address, and existing notebooks and audio overviews keep working. Many people still search for it as NotebookLM.

What is the best free alternative to NotebookLM?

ChatGPT Projects and Claude Projects both work on free plans, and Claude's free plan allows up to 5 projects. To study a course, StudyPDF's free plan gives about 4 materials a week and 2 courses, with a free account and no card. Check each site for current limits.

Is there a NotebookLM alternative with audio overviews?

Audio overviews are the signature feature of Gemini Notebook. Open-source clones such as Open Notebook exist. Recall has a text-to-speech Listen Mode on Plus, but it reads your saved text aloud instead of discussing it. StudyPDF has no audio.

What is better than NotebookLM for studying?

It depends on the job. For reading and asking questions, NotebookLM is strong. If you need practice and progress, pick a tool that builds quizzes and exams and tracks weak topics, such as StudyPDF, or RemNote on its AI plan.

Can I use ChatGPT or Claude instead of NotebookLM?

Yes, for chatting with your files. Both let you add files and instructions to a project. They are general chat tools, so you ask for flashcards or quizzes yourself, and nothing keeps track of what you already know.
