Turbo AI alternatives: 7 study apps compared (2026)
The best Turbo AI alternative depends on what you used it for. To record lectures, Otter.ai transcribes them live. To ask questions about your files for free, try NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook. For a Quizlet-style app with AI, Knowt. For spaced repetition, Anki. To study a whole course with cited answers and progress per concept, StudyPDF. Prices are as of October 2026.
Turbo AI, called TurboLearn until its rebrand, turns lectures, documents, slides, videos and recordings into notes, flashcards, quizzes, short lessons and summaries. Its site says the free tier includes notes, flashcards and quizzes, but it does not publish the limits. In the iOS app, the paid plan is listed at $19.99 a month, next to several yearly and discount offers.
People look for an alternative for three reasons: the monthly price, a free tier whose limits are unclear, or a wish for a tool that does one job better, such as live transcription or long-term review. Each of the seven tools below covers one of those reasons. We checked each vendor's site on 14 October 2026. Prices change often, so check before you pay.

The options
NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook)

- Answers stay close to your sources and cite them
- Audio overviews of your material
Limits
- No spaced repetition and no record of what you already know
- Daily caps on chats and audio overviews on the free plan
Knowt
Best for: A free Quizlet-style app with flashcards and notes
Knowt is a flashcard and notes app known as a free Quizlet alternative. Basic is free. The AI summaries of PDFs, videos and lecture recordings are part of the paid Ultra plan.

- An AI tutor that answers from your material
Limits
- Free limits and the premium price are not on its site, so check both first

Strengths
- Live transcription while the lecturer speaks
- Free plan with 300 minutes a month
- Searchable transcripts and automatic summaries

Strengths
- Bo answers from your course and cites the page, or the second of a video
- Tracks mastery per concept, so the next quiz targets your weak spots
- Anki (.apkg) and Word export on Pro and up, PDF export on every plan
Limits
- No live lecture recording: upload slides, scans or a video link instead
- Weekly caps on every plan, and no audio lessons
Anki
Best for: Long-term memory with the deepest spaced repetition
Anki is a free, open-source flashcard app built on spaced repetition. It has no AI of its own, but it imports decks and text files made elsewhere.
Strengths
- Free on desktop and Android, with free AnkiWeb sync
- The most control over how reviews are scheduled
- A large community of add-ons and shared decks
Limits
- No AI: you make or import the cards yourself

ChatGPT summarizes notes, explains a topic and writes practice questions when you ask. Projects keep your files and instructions together.
Strengths
- One tool for study questions, writing and everything else
- The free plan covers basic use
- Explains a topic in several ways until it clicks
Limits
- Nothing tracks what you know or schedules your reviews
- Answers can mix your files with general knowledge, so check them
How to choose
- Used Turbo AI mainly to record lectures? Otter.ai transcribes them live. Then take the transcript to a study tool.
- Want free and close to your sources? Start with NotebookLM. Want a free flashcard app that feels like Quizlet? Try Knowt.
- Need to remember for months? Anki has the strongest scheduler. Only its iPhone app costs money, once.
- Need to pass an exam from your own lectures? Pick a tool that tests you and tracks weak topics, such as StudyPDF or StudyFetch.
- Run one real lecture through two free plans before you pay. Free limits differ a lot, and some vendors do not publish them.
