The options

StuDocu

Notes and past exams from your own course, plus AI on your uploads

StuDocu is the closest match to Course Hero: lecture notes, summaries and past exams shared by students, searched by school and course. Its AI builds mock exams, quizzes and summaries from that library or from files you upload.

Strengths

  • Over 65 million documents from 180,000 institutions, by its own count
  • A large part of the library is free to read
  • AI mock exams, quizzes and summaries, also from your own uploads

Limits

  • Downloads and the extra tools need Premium, and there is no monthly plan
  • Quality depends on the student who wrote each document, though StuDocu checks and rates them
Official site

Chegg

Step-by-step answers to textbook and homework questions

Chegg is the other big name in homework help. The Study Pack gives up to 20 study support questions a month, a math solver with steps and a graphing calculator, and writing tools for citations and grammar.

Strengths

  • Worked solutions to textbook-style questions
  • A math solver that shows steps and sub-steps
  • Citation, plagiarism and grammar tools in the same pack

Limits

  • Capped at 20 study support questions a month
  • Fees are non-refundable unless disclosed at purchase or required by law, per its terms
Official site

Studypool

A tutor's answer to one specific question, at a price you set

Studypool is a tutor marketplace. You post a question with a budget and a deadline, a vetted tutor picks it up, and you pay once you are satisfied. It also runs the Notebank, a library of documents uploaded by students.

Strengths

  • You choose what each question is worth
  • You pay after the session, once you are satisfied, per its site
  • The Notebank is a Course Hero style library too

Limits

  • The cost changes with every question, so a term budget is hard to plan
  • Built for single answers, not for studying a whole course
Official site

Quizlet

The biggest library of shared sets and classic study modes

Quizlet is the best-known flashcard app. It has a huge library of sets made by other students and modes such as Learn and Test.

Strengths

  • A huge library of ready-made sets for common courses
  • Familiar modes: flashcards, Learn, Test and games
  • Easy to share sets with a class

Limits

  • Some tools, such as practice tests, are capped on the free plan
  • Sets from other students can be wrong or miss what your course covers
Official site

Knowt

A free Quizlet-style app with notes and AI summaries

Knowt is a free flashcard and notes app with a library of shared resources. Ultra removes ads and adds AI summaries of PDFs, videos and lecture recordings, a voice tutor and AP, SAT and ACT prep.

Strengths

  • No cap on the files you create on the free plan
  • A shared library you can browse, like Quizlet
  • Ultra summarizes slides, videos and lecture recordings

Limits

  • The free plan shows ads; Ultra removes them
  • The AI tools sit in the paid Ultra plan
Official site

NotebookLM (Gemini Notebook)

Free questions and answers over your own sources

Google's tool for asking questions about your own sources, renamed Gemini Notebook in July 2026. It answers from the files you add, cites them, and makes study guides and audio overviews.

Strengths

  • AI over your own files for free, which Knowt keeps in Ultra
  • Answers stay close to your sources and cite them
  • Audio overviews of your material

Limits

  • No flashcard scheduler and no record of what you already know
  • A usage limit on chats and audio overviews on the free plan, renewed every five hours
Official site

StudyPDF

That's us

Studying a whole course with cited answers and progress per concept

StudyPDF is the study-tool side of this list. It holds no other students' documents and has no tutors. You upload your own slides, documents, scans, photos or a YouTube link, and it becomes one course. The New material button builds flashcards, quizzes, practice exams and study guides, and Bo, the tutor, answers from your course with the page cited. Mastery is tracked per concept. The free plan needs an account, no card.

Strengths

  • Every card and answer cites the page of your own material
  • Tracks mastery per concept, so you see what to review next
  • PDF export on every plan, Anki (.apkg) and Word on Pro and up

Limits

  • No shared library: it never shows you what other students wrote
  • No human tutors and no textbook solutions to look up
  • Weekly caps on every plan

How to choose

  • Want the notes another student wrote for your exact class? StuDocu, or the Notebank on Studypool. See what the free part shows first, and what your school's honor code allows.
  • Stuck on one homework or textbook problem? Chegg or Studypool give a worked answer. Use it to understand the steps, not to hand in.
  • Want to learn the course instead of reading someone else's answers? Quizlet, Knowt, NotebookLM and StudyPDF all work from material you choose.
  • Want to pay nothing? StuDocu's free part, Knowt Basic, Quizlet's free plan, NotebookLM and StudyPDF's free plan cost nothing to start. Course Hero lets you earn access by uploading.
  • Test two of them on one real lecture before you pay for a term.

More on this

Course Hero sells access to study documents that other students uploaded, sorted by school and course. It adds tutor answers, textbook solutions and an Ask AI. A free Basic account lets you browse, but not fully view or download documents. Premier unlocks up to 30 documents a month, and Course Hero says you can earn free access by uploading your own.

People look for sites like Course Hero for three reasons: the paywall, not knowing who wrote a document or whether it is right, and a school honor code that may not allow copied answers. The seven tools below answer different ones of these. We checked each vendor's site on 16 October 2026. Prices change, so check before you pay.

The real split is this. A library gives you something someone else already made. A study tool turns your own lectures into practice. They solve different problems, and many students use one of each.

Questions and answers

Is Course Hero legit for students?

Yes, it is a real company and a real service, a Learneo, Inc. business. Whether you may use it depends on your school. Course Hero has its own honor code, and many schools treat handing in copied answers as misconduct. Use other people's documents to study, and check your course rules.

How much does Course Hero cost?

Course Hero has a free Basic account and a paid Premier membership. Premier includes 30 unlocks a month, tutor questions, textbook solutions and Ask AI, and a Premier Plus bundle adds QuillBot Premium and Symbolab. We found no price on its plans page in October 2026. It is shown at checkout, and the plan renews automatically until you cancel.

Is there a free version of Course Hero?

Yes. A Basic account is free and lets you browse documents and use the literature infographics, but you cannot fully view or download documents. Course Hero says you can earn full access by uploading your own study documents.

Is Course Hero still working?

Yes. On 16 October 2026 the site loads, sells Premier and lists Premier Plus. If a document is locked, that is the paywall, not an outage.

What is the best free site like Course Hero?

It depends on what you need. For other students' notes, StuDocu has a free part. For flashcards, Quizlet, Knowt and StudyPDF have free plans. NotebookLM is free for questions on your own sources. Chegg and Studypool charge for answers.
