Kahoot alternatives: free games like Kahoot for class
The best Kahoot alternative depends on the job. Wayground (formerly Quizizz) runs live and self-paced quizzes. Blooket and Gimkit turn review into arcade or strategy games. Quizlet Live puts students in teams, and Mentimeter adds polls to a talk. For practice after class, StudyPDF builds quizzes from your slides and shares them by link. Prices are as of October 2026.
Teachers usually leave Kahoot! for one of three reasons. The free Kahoot! Go plan caps how many players can join, and 50 players takes the paid Bronze plan at $3 a month, billed $36 a year. Some want students to answer at their own pace instead of racing a timer. Others want games with more strategy than speed.
The tools below fall into three groups: classroom game tools (Wayground, Blooket, Gimkit, Quizlet Live, Baamboozle), a presentation tool (Mentimeter) and a study tool for after class (StudyPDF). We checked free plans and prices on each vendor's own site on 14 October 2026. They change often, so check again before you pay.

The options
Wayground
Best for: Live and self-paced quizzes, homework and lessons in one place
Wayground is the new name of Quizizz. Teachers run quizzes live or let students work at their own pace, and its AI can generate, import and adapt questions.
Strengths
- Students see the questions on their own screen, so nobody waits for the projector
- Live and student-paced modes, so the same quiz works as homework
- Basic includes AI tools and 20+ accommodations such as Read Aloud
Limits
- The free Basic plan stores only 20 activities and has fewer question types
- The full question bank and admin reports need a school or district plan
Blooket
Best for: Arcade-style review games for younger classes
Blooket turns a question set into games such as tower defense or racing. A teacher hosts, students join on their own device, and the questions stay the same while the game changes.
Strengths
- Many game modes, so the same set feels new each week
- Free accounts can host games for up to 60 players
- Students join from any browser, no app needed
Limits
- Some modes and the 300-player limit need Blooket Plus
- Better for quick review than for checking deeper understanding
Gimkit
Best for: Strategy games for middle and high school
Gimkit is a live game show where right answers earn in-game cash that students spend on upgrades and power-ups. Gimkit Basic is free for educators.
Strengths
- The strategy layer rewards answering well, not only answering fast
- Basic plays featured modes with as many students as you want
- Classes and reports are included on Basic
Limits
- Basic has about three game modes at a time, the rest are Pro
- Homework assignments and image or audio questions need Pro
Quizlet Live
Best for: Team games built from Quizlet flashcard sets
Quizlet Live is a classroom game inside Quizlet. Students are put into teams and have to work together to match terms from a study set, so talking is part of the game.
Strengths
- Free for teachers, and students need no account to play
- Teams have to talk, which rewards working together over speed
- Runs on any of the millions of existing Quizlet sets
Limits
- You need a Quizlet set first, so it suits vocabulary and terms best
- Many of Quizlet's other study tools are in the paid plan
Mentimeter
Best for: Polls, word clouds and quizzes during a lecture or talk
Mentimeter adds interactive slides to a presentation: polls, word clouds, Q&A and quizzes. The audience joins with a code, so it suits lectures, seminars and meetings more than game-style review.
Strengths
- Strong for open questions, word clouds and anonymous Q&A
- Nobody needs an account or an app to join
- Discounted plans for schools and universities
Limits
- The free plan stops at 50 participants a month, which two classes can use up
- Less of a game than Kahoot!, Blooket or Gimkit
Baamboozle
Best for: Team games on one shared screen, no student devices needed
Baamboozle is a team quiz game played on one board at the front of the room. Teams take turns picking questions, so it works in classes without phones or laptops.
Strengths
- Runs on one screen, so students need no devices
- Very little setup for a warm-up or a review lesson
- 30-day money-back guarantee on the paid plan
Limits
- Not built for students to practice alone
- The full feature set needs Baamboozle+
StudyPDF
That's usBest for: Self-paced quizzes and practice tests from your own slides
StudyPDF is not a live game. You upload your slides, worksheets or notes, it builds quizzes, flashcards and practice exams from them, and you check and edit them. Then you share the course by one link.
Strengths
- Questions come from your own material and cite the page
- One link per course opens in any browser. 3, 10 or 30 people per course can join and save progress on Free, Pro or Ultra
- Each student sees which concepts they are still missing
Limits
- No live hosted game, no PIN, no leaderboard
- No library of ready-made quizzes, everything comes from your files
How to choose
