How do you make flashcards in Word?
Open a blank Word document, set narrow margins, insert a table with 2 columns and 4 rows, and type the question in the left cell and the answer in the right cell of each row. Turn on all borders, print, cut along the lines and fold each row in the middle. That gives four fold-over cards per page, and you can add pages for more.
Word has no flashcard feature, so the table method is the standard way: every row of the table is one card. A first page takes about ten minutes and works well for short lists such as vocabulary, formulas or dates.
The limits show quickly. You retype everything by hand, the cards are paper, you cannot shuffle or rate them on a screen, and a whole chapter means many pages. Use big text, 18 to 24 points, one fact per card, and heavier paper if your printer takes it.
Word is a fine choice for a small set you want to print. For a full course, a tool that builds the cards from your material saves most of the work.
- 1Open a new blank document and choose Layout, Margins, Narrow.
- 2Choose Insert, Table, and make a grid with 2 columns and 4 rows.
- 3Open Table Properties and set the row height to exactly 2.4 inches (6.5 cm on A4), so four rows fill the page.
- 4Type the question in the left cell and the answer in the right cell of each row. Use big text and center it in the cell.
- 5Select the table and choose Borders, All Borders, so you get cutting lines.
- 6Print, cut along the lines and fold each row in the middle. Add pages for more cards.
