How long is the AP Lang exam?
The AP English Language and Composition exam takes 3 hours and 15 minutes. Section I is 45 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour, worth 45% of your score. Section II gives you 2 hours and 15 minutes, including a 15-minute reading period, for 3 essays worth 55%: synthesis, rhetorical analysis and argument. The exam is fully digital, in the Bluebook app.
The 45 multiple-choice questions come in two kinds: 23 to 25 reading questions and 20 to 22 writing questions. With 60 minutes, that is 80 seconds per question. Only correct answers count toward your score, so answer every question, even when you have to guess.
Most of the time goes to the essays. After the 15-minute reading period you have 2 hours for three essays, about 40 minutes each if you split it evenly. Use the reading period on the synthesis prompt and its sources, since that essay asks you to read the most before you write.
You type the whole exam in Bluebook, essays included, so practice timed essays on a keyboard. In 2027 the exam is on Wednesday, May 12, in Session 1, usually the morning. Check-in and instructions come on top of the 3 hours and 15 minutes, and your AP coordinator tells you when and where to report.
