How long is the AP Lit exam?
The AP English Literature and Composition exam takes 3 hours. Section I is 55 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour, worth 45% of your score. Section II is 3 free-response essays in 2 hours, worth 55%: a poetry analysis, a prose analysis and a literary argument about a work you choose. The exam is fully digital, in the Bluebook app.
In more detail
The 55 multiple-choice questions come in 5 sets of 8 to 13 questions, and each set follows a passage of prose fiction, drama or poetry. At least 2 passages are prose and at least 2 are poetry. One hour for 55 questions is about 65 seconds per question, but you also have to read the passages, so pace yourself by set: about 12 minutes each.
Section II gives you 2 hours for 3 essays, about 40 minutes each if you split it evenly. Question 1 asks you to analyze a poem, Question 2 a passage of prose fiction, and Question 3 to build an argument about a concept, issue or element in a work you pick yourself. Choose that work of fiction ahead of time and know it well, because you will not get the text.
In 2027 the exam is on Wednesday, May 5, in Session 1. You complete everything in Bluebook, essays included, so practice typing timed essays. Check-in and instructions come on top of the 3 hours, and your AP coordinator tells you when and where to report.
