How long is the AP Gov exam?
The AP U.S. Government and Politics exam is 3 hours long: a 1 hour 20 minute multiple-choice section and a 1 hour 40 minute free-response section, worth 50% each. Section I has 55 questions. Section II has 4 free-response questions. It is a fully digital exam, so you answer everything in the Bluebook app.
In more detail
Section I gives you 80 minutes for 55 questions, about 1 minute 25 seconds each. It mixes single questions with sets of questions. You describe, explain and compare political concepts, apply Supreme Court decisions to real-life scenarios, analyze data in graphs, charts, tables, maps and infographics, and read foundational documents and other sources.
Section II gives you 100 minutes for 4 written responses: a concept application, a quantitative analysis, a SCOTUS comparison and an evidence-based argument essay. The average is 25 minutes each, but the first three are shorter tasks. One workable split is about 20 minutes for each of the first three and about 40 for the argument essay.
In 2027 the exam is on Tuesday, May 4, in Session 1, usually the morning. Bluebook submits your responses automatically at the end. The 3 hours are testing time only: check-in, device setup and instructions happen on top, so plan to be at school longer than 3 hours. Your AP coordinator tells you when and where to report.
