How long are AP exams?
Most AP exams take 2 to 3 hours, and several run 3 hours and 15 minutes. AP U.S. History, AP World History, AP English Language and AP Chemistry are 3 hours 15 minutes. AP Biology and AP Physics 1 are 3 hours. AP Psychology is 2 hours 40 minutes, and AP Macroeconomics and AP Microeconomics are 2 hours 10 minutes.
Almost every exam has two sections: multiple choice first, then free response, such as essays or worked problems. From 2027 the world language and culture exams flip that order and start with free response. Your multiple-choice score counts only correct answers, with no penalty for wrong or skipped ones, so answer every question.
AP exams come in two digital formats. Fully digital exams, such as AP U.S. History, AP English Language and AP Psychology, are answered entirely in the Bluebook app. Hybrid digital exams, such as AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB and AP Macroeconomics, show every question in Bluebook, but you handwrite your free-response answers in a paper booklet. Your course's exam page says which one you have.
The 2027 exams run over two weeks, May 3 to 7 and May 10 to 14. Each day has a Session 1, usually in the morning, and a Session 2, usually in the afternoon. Your AP coordinator tells you exactly when and where to report. Check-in and instructions come on top of the exam length, and approved accommodations such as extended time make it longer.

- 1Look up each of your exams on its AP Students course page: length, sections, format and date.
- 2Note whether the exam is fully digital or hybrid, and practice free responses the same way, typed or handwritten.
- 3Take at least one full practice exam at the real length, in one sitting.
- 4Split your time section by section the way the exam does, and note where you run short.
- 5If your exam is in Session 1, do your practice exams in the morning too.
- 6A week before, ask your AP coordinator for your exact report time and room.
