Mind map

Mind map template: free printable

A mind map template is a blank page with your topic in the center and branches around it for subtopics and details. Print the free sheet below or save it as a PDF, write the topic in the middle, give each branch one keyword and add details underneath. A filled example on World War I shows the result.

A mind map works because it forces short keywords and a clear hierarchy. The center holds one topic, each main branch is a category, and the lines under it hold the details. You see a whole chapter at a glance, which helps when you revise or plan an essay.

Keep one idea per branch and one or two words per line. If you have coloured pens, give each branch its own colour. A mind map is best for overview and brainstorming. When you need to show how ideas connect, use a concept map instead.

How to use it

  1. 1Write your topic in the center in a few words: the chapter title or the question you have to answer.
  2. 2Add the main branches for the big categories. Six fit the sheet. Think of chapter headings, causes and effects, or the parts of a process.
  3. 3Give each branch one keyword. Short words are easier to recall than sentences.
  4. 4Write two to four details on the lines under each branch. Dates, names and formulas are the facts you will need in the exam.
  5. 5Add a colour or a small symbol to each branch if you like. It helps your eye find a branch fast.
  6. 6Close the sheet and redraw the map from memory. Compare it with the original and mark what you missed.
Or let StudyPDF fill it

Let StudyPDF fill it from your materials

Upload your document, slides or lecture script, press New material and pick Mind map. StudyPDF builds an interactive map of the topic from your own file that you can pan, zoom and expand. Ask Bo about any branch and the answer cites the page. You can export the map as a PDF to print it. A free account is enough, no credit card.

Questions and answers

How do I make a simple mind map?

Write your topic in the center, draw a few branches for the main categories, give each branch one keyword and add details on the lines below it. Keep the words short and add colour if you like. The sheet on this page already has the layout.

What three things must a mind map have?

A central topic, branches that carry the main ideas, and short keywords instead of full sentences. Colours, symbols and small drawings are optional, but they can help you remember.

Can ChatGPT generate mind maps?

It can draft a branch structure from a topic you give it. It answers from general knowledge, so compare the result with your own course material. StudyPDF builds its Mind map from the files you upload, and its answers cite the page.

How many branches should a mind map have?

Five to seven main branches are easy to scan, and this sheet has six. If one branch gets crowded, give that subtopic a mind map of its own.
