Concept map

Concept map template: free printable

A concept map template is a blank page with a main concept in the center, boxes for related concepts and a link word on every connector. Print the free sheet below or save it as a PDF, write your topic in the middle, then add concepts and label each link with a verb. A filled example shows how it looks.

A concept map shows how ideas relate, not only that they belong together. The link words do the work: "is controlled by" or "produces" turns two boxes into a statement you can read, check and remember. That is the difference to a mind map, which groups ideas under branches without saying how they connect.

Use a concept map when a topic has many connections, such as a process, a system or a theory. Keep it to one page with 6 to 12 concepts and read every line out loud as a sentence. If a sentence sounds wrong, the map has just shown you what you have not understood yet.

From a lecture file, StudyPDF makes an interactive mind map that shows how the topics connect. Make a mind map from my materials

How to use it

  1. 1Pick one topic or question and write it in the center box. A focus question like "How does a cell stay alive?" keeps the map from sprawling.
  2. 2List the 6 to 10 concepts that matter most and write them in the outer boxes. Use nouns or short noun phrases.
  3. 3Draw a line from the center to each concept. Write a verb or short phrase on the line, like "is controlled by" or "produces".
  4. 4Read every line as a sentence: concept, link word, concept. If it does not make sense, change the link word or move the concept.
  5. 5Add cross-links between outer concepts where they relate. These connections are where the real understanding sits.
  6. 6Cover the map and redraw it from memory. Check what you forgot against your notes and fix the map.

Let StudyPDF fill it from your materials

StudyPDF has no separate concept map, but its Mind map material is the closest. Upload your slides or documents, press New material, pick Mind map and choose the lecture or topic. You get an interactive map built from your own file that you can pan, zoom and expand. Ask Bo about any branch and the answer cites the page. A free account is enough.

Questions and answers

Does Word have a concept map template?

You can build one in Word with shapes and connector lines, but it takes a while. The printable sheet on this page is quicker: print it and fill it in by hand, or save it as a PDF.

How do I create a concept map step by step?

Write the main concept in the center, add the concepts that belong to it, connect them with lines, and write a verb on every line. Read each line as a sentence, fix the ones that sound wrong, then add cross-links between outer concepts.

What is the difference between a concept map and a mind map?

A mind map has one center and branches, and the lines carry no words. A concept map labels every link with a verb and can connect any two ideas, so it shows relationships instead of only groups.

Can ChatGPT make concept maps?

It can draft concepts and link words from a topic you describe. It answers from general knowledge, so check the result against your own lecture notes. StudyPDF builds from the files you upload and cites the page.

How many concepts should a concept map have?

Six to twelve is enough for one page. If you need more, split the topic into two maps and link them.
