Cornell notes

Cornell notes template: free printable PDF

A Cornell notes template splits one page into three parts: a narrow cue column on the left, a wide notes area on the right and a summary strip at the bottom. Print the blank sheet below, take notes on the right during class, add cue questions afterwards and finish with a short summary. The filled example shows what a real page looks like.

The format comes from Walter Pauk, who taught study skills at Cornell University in the 1950s. The page does the planning for you. The layout tells you what goes where, so you spend class listening instead of deciding how to set up your notes.

The cue column is the useful part. Once each block of notes has a question next to it, you can cover the right side and test yourself, which beats rereading. The summary strip makes you say the page in your own words, and that shows fast what you did not understand.

Print on A4 or Letter at 100 percent so the lines stay readable. Saved as a PDF, the sheet also works in a notes app on a tablet.

Photosynthesis: how plants make glucose
Cues and questions
  • What goes in, what comes out?
  • Where in the cell?
  • Light reactions: what happens?
  • Calvin cycle: what happens?
  • What limits the rate?
Notes
Inputs: light, water, CO2. Outputs: glucose and oxygen.
Chloroplasts hold chlorophyll, which absorbs mostly red and blue light.
Light reactions: thylakoid membranes. Water is split, O2 is released.
Light reactions make ATP and NADPH, the energy carriers.
Calvin cycle: stroma. Uses ATP and NADPH to fix CO2 into sugar.
Rate rises with light and CO2, then levels off.
High temperature slows the enzymes and lowers the rate.
Exam tip: know which stage makes oxygen and which makes sugar.
Summary

Photosynthesis turns light, water and CO2 into glucose and oxygen inside chloroplasts. The light reactions capture energy as ATP and NADPH, and the Calvin cycle uses that energy to build sugar. Light, CO2 and temperature set the rate.

StudyPDF writes the notes and the self-test questions from your lecture file, and links each part to its page. Make notes from my materials

How to use it

  1. 1Print the blank sheet or save it as a PDF. Write your name, course and the date in the header.
  2. 2In class, write only in the wide notes column. Use short phrases, formulas and examples, and leave a gap between ideas.
  3. 3Within a day, read your notes and add a cue in the left column for each block: a question you could answer from the notes, or a keyword.
  4. 4Cover the notes column and answer each cue out loud or on paper. Mark every cue you could not answer.
  5. 5Write the summary strip in two or three sentences, in your own words, without looking at the notes.
  6. 6Review the page again after a few days using only the cue column. Notes from weeks ago stay usable this way.

Questions and answers

What is the Cornell notes format?

A page split into a cue column on the left, a notes area on the right and a summary strip at the bottom. You take notes on the right, add cues after class and write the summary at the end.

Are Cornell notes effective?

They work best when you use the cue column to test yourself. Writing notes alone is passive. Covering the notes and answering the cues is retrieval practice, which is well supported for learning. No format beats every other one for every student.

How big are the sections of a Cornell page?

The classic layout has a cue column about 2.5 inches (6 cm) wide and a summary strip about 2 inches (5 cm) tall. The notes area takes the rest. The sheet above uses the same proportions.

Can AI make Cornell notes?

A chatbot can sort pasted text into cues, notes and a summary, but it may add details your lecture never covered. Check each line against your source. A guide built from your own file with the page cited is safer.
