Study guide template: free printable PDF

A study guide template gives you one page with fixed slots: an overview, key terms with definitions, self-check questions and key takeaways. Print the blank sheet below, fill it from your lecture notes or a textbook chapter, and quiz yourself from the questions box. The filled example shows a finished guide on the cardiovascular system.

A study guide is not a copy of your notes. It is a one-page version that pulls out what you need to know and tests it. The template gives you four slots so you cannot skip the parts that matter: overview, key terms, questions and takeaways.

Fill it in after you finish a chapter or unit, not during the lecture. Writing the overview from memory is the first test. If you cannot, the gap tells you what to reread.

One sheet per topic works better than one huge guide. For a full exam, make one sheet per chapter and keep them together. Use the back of the page for a short list of muddy points, the things you still get wrong.

Overview

The cardiovascular system moves blood, oxygen and nutrients through the body. The heart pumps, the vessels carry the blood, and the blood transports gases, nutrients and waste.

Key concepts
Term
Definition
Cardiac output
Heart rate times stroke volume, the blood pumped per minute.
Stroke volume
The blood one ventricle pumps out with each beat.
Systole
The phase when the ventricles contract and push blood out.
Diastole
The phase when the heart relaxes and fills with blood.
Self-check questions
1. What happens to cardiac output during exercise, and why?
2. Which side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs?
3. How do arteries differ from veins in structure and function?
4. What does a blood pressure of 120/80 mean?
Key takeaways
• The right side pumps to the lungs, the left side to the body.
• Cardiac output rises with heart rate and with stroke volume.
• Blood pressure is the force in the arteries during systole and diastole.

This is the kind of study guide StudyPDF writes from a lecture file, with key concepts, self-test questions and the source page for each part. Make a study guide from my materials

How to use it

  1. 1Print the blank sheet or save it as a PDF. Fill in your name, the course and the exam date.
  2. 2Pick one chapter or lecture. Close the book and write the overview in two or three sentences from memory.
  3. 3List the key terms your lecturer stressed and write each definition in your own words, one line each.
  4. 4Write three to five questions an exam could ask. Mix what-is questions with why and how questions.
  5. 5Cover the guide and answer the questions. Mark the ones you missed and reread those pages.
  6. 6Finish with two or three takeaways you must remember, and read the sheet again the day before the exam.

Questions and answers

How do I create a study guide?

Pick one chapter, write an overview from memory, list the key terms with definitions in your own words, add practice questions and finish with takeaways. The template above holds those four parts.

What is the best format for a study guide?

One that includes self-testing. A page with an overview, key terms, questions and takeaways beats a copy of your notes, because the questions make you recall instead of reread.

Can you use AI to make a study guide?

Yes. In StudyPDF you upload your slides or notes, press New material and pick Study guide. Each section cites the source page, so you can check it. Treat it like any study aid and read it against your course.

Is there a free tool that can create study guides?

StudyPDF has a free plan that makes about 4 materials a week, study guides included, from your own files. You need a free account, no card.
