NotebookLM vs Gemini: which is better for studying?

NotebookLM, now called Gemini Notebook, answers only from the files you add and cites them. Gemini is Google's general assistant: it searches the web and can open the same notebooks. Use Gemini Notebook to check what your sources say, Gemini to understand what they mean, and StudyPDF when you want to be tested on a whole course.

Who should pick which

Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM)

Pick it if you have fixed sources and want answers that stay inside them: lecture notes, a reading list, a stack of papers, with audio or video to review.

Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, answers only from the sources you add and cites the passage. A notebook can become audio and video overviews, flashcards, quizzes, mind maps, reports and slide decks.

Strengths

  • Answers come only from your sources, with a citation to the passage
  • Turns a notebook into audio or video overviews, flashcards, quizzes and mind maps
  • 50 sources per notebook free, 100 on AI Plus, 300 on AI Pro

Limits

  • Usage limits reset every five hours and also have a weekly cap
  • Stays inside your sources, so a gap in your notes stays a gap
  • A deleted notebook cannot be recovered

Gemini

Pick it if a topic is unclear and you need a fresh explanation, context from the web or writing help, or if you want your notebooks and search in one chat.

Gemini is Google's general AI assistant. It searches the web, works with Gmail and Drive, opens your notebooks and, in the web app, builds study notebooks with quizzes, lessons and progress tracking.

Strengths

  • Explains and brainstorms on any topic, with web search for what your notes miss
  • Opens the same notebooks and can mix their sources with web results
  • Study notebooks add a diagnostic quiz, short lessons and progress tracking
  • AI Pro free for a year for eligible US college students (redeem by Dec 31, 2026)

Limits

  • Answers can draw on the web, so check them against your lecture
  • No Studio panel: Video Overviews and infographics stay in Gemini Notebook
  • Study notebooks need Keep Activity turned on and are not in the Mac app

More on this

Both come from Google, and since July 16, 2026 the names overlap: Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. It is the same product with the same notebooks, so you may see either name. Gemini is a different app, the general assistant. Your notebooks now show up in both, and renaming one, adding sources or editing its instructions carries over to the other.

The practical difference is what an answer may draw on. In Gemini Notebook, Google says responses are grounded exclusively in your notebook sources. In Gemini they are grounded in the same sources but can also use web search and other tools. Video Overviews and infographics are Gemini Notebook features, while Gemini can also make Audio Overviews, quizzes and flashcards from chat or Canvas. Gemini's own addition is study notebooks in the web app: a diagnostic quiz, short lessons and progress tracking, with Keep Activity turned on.

On money it is a tie. Both are free with a Google account, and Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month) or AI Pro ($19.99) raises the limits in both. As of October 2026, eligible US college students can get AI Pro free for a year if they redeem by December 31, 2026. Both help you understand material you already have. Gemini also builds quizzes and, for set exams such as the SAT, full-length practice tests. A study-first tool such as StudyPDF is built to turn your own course files into practice exams and a score for every concept.

Questions and answers

Is Gemini the same as NotebookLM?

No, but they are linked. NotebookLM is now called Gemini Notebook, a separate app for working with your own sources. Gemini is Google's general assistant. Since 2026 your notebooks show up in both and stay in sync, but answers in Gemini Notebook come only from your sources, while Gemini can also use web search.

Is NotebookLM free?

Yes. As of October 2026, Gemini Notebook, the new name of NotebookLM, is free with a Google account: 100 notebooks with up to 50 sources each. Usage limits reset every five hours, with a weekly cap. Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month) allows 200 notebooks with 100 sources and twice the limits; AI Pro ($19.99) allows 500 notebooks with 300 sources and four times the limits.

What are the limitations of NotebookLM?

It stays inside the sources you add, so it cannot fill a gap in your notes. Usage limits depend on prompt length, sources and features, and reset every five hours with a weekly cap. A deleted notebook cannot be recovered. Google presents it first as a research tool; for timed practice exams and a score per concept across a course, look at a study-first tool such as StudyPDF.

Which is better for studying, NotebookLM or Gemini?

They do different jobs. Gemini Notebook is better for checking what your lecture says, because answers stay in your sources. Gemini is better when you need another explanation or context from the web. Its study notebooks add a diagnostic quiz and progress tracking. If you must pick one for exam prep on fixed files, start with Gemini Notebook.

Are Gemini and NotebookLM free for students?

Yes, for a year if you are eligible. As of October 2026, eligible US college students aged 18 and up can get Google AI Pro free for a year, with four times the Gemini Notebook limits. Eligible students in 140+ other markets get AI Plus free for a year, with twice the limits. Redeem by December 31, 2026; after that it costs $19.99 or $4.99 a month unless you cancel.
