ChatGPT vs Gemini: which is better for studying?
Pick ChatGPT if you want an all-round assistant with study mode on every plan and the most third-party apps. Pick Gemini if your files are in Google Drive, or you are an eligible US college student who can get Google AI Pro free for a year. The main paid plan of each costs about $20 a month. To be tested on your own course files, StudyPDF is a third option.
ChatGPT, from OpenAI, and Gemini, from Google, are the two biggest AI assistants. Both have a free plan, read your files, search the web, talk by voice and make images. Which model scores higher changes with nearly every release, so for studying the useful question is which tools come with the chat.
ChatGPT's answer is study mode: a tutor setting in the tools menu that asks questions and checks your understanding, on every plan. Gemini's answer is a student hub: a study notebook per course, quizzes made from your notes and a performance tracker for weak areas. On paid plans Gemini also works inside Gmail, Docs and Drive. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and AI Plus $4.99. ChatGPT Plus is about $20, with a cheaper Go plan in many countries.
The free student year is the biggest money question. As of October 2026, eligible US college students aged 18 and up can get Google AI Pro free for a year if they redeem by December 31, 2026; it renews at $19.99 a month unless you cancel. Outside the US, test both free plans on the same lecture before you pay for either.
