Claude vs ChatGPT: which is better for studying?
Pick ChatGPT if you want one all-round assistant with a study mode on every plan, image generation, voice and the widest app support. Pick Claude if you mostly read long texts and want calm, step-by-step explanations and detailed essay feedback. The main paid plan of each costs about $20 a month. To be tested on your own course files, StudyPDF is a third option.
ChatGPT, made by OpenAI, is the most used AI assistant. Claude, made by Anthropic, has grown fast among students and people who write a lot. Both read uploaded files, search the web, keep a course's chats together in Projects and run on web, desktop and phone. The models behind them change every few months, so a benchmark from spring says little about today. The tools around the chat change less.
Both have a tutor setting. In ChatGPT it is study mode, in the tools menu, which asks questions and checks your understanding instead of giving the answer. In Claude it is the Learning style, which works the same way. ChatGPT adds image generation and a cheaper Go plan in many countries. Claude's free plan allows up to 5 Projects, and Pro costs $20 a month or $17 a month billed yearly.
A routine that works with either one: upload one lecture, switch on study mode or the Learning style, and ask it to quiz you one question at a time. Ask for the passage each answer is based on and check it in your file. Neither tool keeps track of what you know across a whole course; that part is up to you.
