Tool by tool

Anki

Long-term memory, with the most tunable review schedule

Anki is a free, open-source flashcard program that schedules each review for you. It offers the FSRS algorithm next to the older SM-2, handles decks of 100,000+ cards, and add-ons extend it.

Strengths

  • Free on desktop and Android, and sync through AnkiWeb is free too
  • FSRS scheduling and image occlusion are built in (occlusion since version 23.10)
  • Add-ons and publicly shared decks extend it

Limits

  • More setup than the others: decks, note types and options come first
  • Anki does not turn notes into cards by itself: you type them, import them or add a plugin
Official site

Quizlet

Ready-made sets and games for a quick start

Quizlet lets you make flashcards, search millions of sets made by other students and teachers, and study them in four modes and games. Smart Assist builds a set from notes you upload or a prompt.

Strengths

  • A huge public library: for many subjects a set already exists
  • The free app and the simple editor make it easy to start
  • Smart Assist builds cards from your notes

Limits

  • Public sets are made by users, so check them before you trust them
  • Plus caps practice tests, Learn rounds and solutions each month, and ad-free studying is paid
Official site

Knowt

A free Quizlet-style app with every study mode

Knowt is a flashcard and notes app that calls itself a free Quizlet alternative. On the free plan you make sets and notes and use Learn, Practice Test, Spaced Repetition, Match and Flashcards on your own sets.

Strengths

  • The free plan has every study mode, plus millions of public sets
  • Spaced repetition is included
  • In a class, AI features on material your teacher shares are free

Limits

  • AI summarizers are 1 a month on the free plan; Ultra gives more
  • Paid monthly, Ultra costs about double the yearly rate
Official site

Brainscape

Confidence-rated spaced repetition and expert-made decks

Brainscape is built on confidence-based spaced repetition: you rate each card from 1 to 5 and it decides when you see it again. It also offers certified, expert-made decks for exams and languages.

Strengths

  • The free plan lets you make, import and share cards and study with spaced repetition
  • Certified decks, vetted by experts, for exams, languages and certifications
  • AI builds cards from files such as slides, documents and videos

Limits

  • Pro unlocks full AI card creation, certified decks, and images and sounds on cards
  • Private content is a Pro feature
Official site

RemNote

Notes and flashcards in one place

RemNote joins an outline-style note editor, document annotation and spaced repetition flashcards. Cards come from the notes you write. The free plan caps annotated documents, image occlusion and AI cards, and the paid plans lift those caps.

Strengths

  • Cards live inside your notes, so you write and study in one place
  • The exam scheduler spreads your reviews up to your exam date
  • Image occlusion has no cap on Pro, and AI card creation grows with each paid plan

Limits

  • The free plan allows only 3 annotated documents and 5 occlusion images
  • AI is tight on the free plan: 250 credits a month, against 1,000 on Pro and 20,000 on Pro with AI

StudyPDF

That's us

Cards from your own lecture files, with the figures on them

StudyPDF is not a deck library. Upload your slides, notes or a photo of a page and it builds flashcards, quizzes and practice exams from them, with the figures from your slides on the cards and the source page linked. A labeled diagram can become an image-occlusion deck, and Pro and up export decks to Anki (.apkg). The free plan needs an account, no card, and gives you about 4 materials a week.

Strengths

  • Figures cropped from your slides can go on either side of a card
  • Image-occlusion decks from labeled diagrams
  • Anki (.apkg) export on Pro and up, with Anki's native Image Occlusion
  • Tracks what you know per concept, so the next quiz targets your gaps

Limits

  • Not a public deck library: to browse ready-made decks, Quizlet and Brainscape are better
  • Weekly caps on every plan, and for years of daily review Anki's FSRS scheduler fits better
  • AI-made cards deserve a quick skim before an exam

How we picked

  • We started from the jobs people give flashcards: remember for the long run, cram for a test, or turn lecture notes into cards.
  • Free tiers and prices come from each vendor's own site, checked in October 2026. Prices change, so check before you pay.
  • We kept tools that handle any subject and run on web and phone. Single-subject apps, such as language-only apps, are not on this list.
  • We sort by use case, not by rank. StudyPDF is one option with real limits, and Anki and Quizlet beat it where we say so.

More on this

Three questions settle most of it. Do you want to make your own cards, or search for ready-made ones? Do you need a review schedule for months, or a few weeks of cramming? And what will you pay? Quizlet and Brainscape have public libraries. Anki has the most tunable review schedule. If you would rather not type cards at all, Knowt, RemNote and StudyPDF can build them from your notes.

We make one of these apps, so the table is dated and every price comes from the vendor's own site. Anki beats StudyPDF at spaced repetition and costs nothing on a computer. Quizlet and Brainscape beat it for ready-made decks, because StudyPDF is not a public deck library. Where StudyPDF helps is turning your own lecture files into cards, figures included.

Want a closer look at two of them? Quizlet against Anki is at studypdf.net/compare/quizlet-vs-anki, with /compare/knowt-vs-quizlet and /compare/anki-vs-brainscape next to it. Thinking of leaving one app? See studypdf.net/alternatives/anki-alternatives and /alternatives/quizlet-alternatives.

Questions and answers

What is the best flashcard app?

It depends on how you study. Anki is the best for long-term memory and is free on desktop and Android. Quizlet is best for ready-made sets, Knowt is the free Quizlet-style option, Brainscape has expert-made decks, and RemNote joins notes and cards. StudyPDF suits cards built from your own lecture files.

What is the best free flashcard app?

Anki is free on desktop and Android, and sync is free too. Knowt's free plan includes every study mode on your own sets, and Brainscape lets you make and study your own cards for free. Quizlet's free account covers flashcards and practice questions, with extras such as more practice tests behind Plus.

Is Anki better than Quizlet?

For remembering things over months, yes: Anki's scheduler is built for it, and FSRS is built in. Quizlet is better for ready-made sets and a quick start with no setup. Pick by the job you need the cards for.

Is Anki worth the $25?

The $24.99 is for AnkiMobile on iPhone and iPad, a one-time purchase that Anki says funds its development. If you review daily on an iPhone it is a fair price, less than a year of Quizlet Plus ($35.99). On a computer and on Android (AnkiDroid), Anki costs nothing.

Is Brainscape better than Anki?

Brainscape is easier to set up and sells expert-made decks. Its AI is capped on the free plan, and Pro is $7.99 a month, billed yearly. Anki costs nothing on desktop and Android and can be tuned much deeper. Pick Brainscape to start in minutes, Anki for control.
