Best AI tools for nursing students

The best AI tool for a nursing student depends on the job. For NCLEX-style questions, use a question bank such as UWorld. For cards you review every day, use Anki. To ask questions across your own slides, try NotebookLM or StudyPDF. NurseLearn is built for nursing, and RemNote suits notes plus cards. Prices are as of October 2026.

Nursing school asks for three kinds of study at once. You memorize a lot of facts, like lab values, drug classes and dosage formulas. You apply them in prioritization and delegation questions. And you sit exams written by your own program, from your own slides. No single tool covers all three, so most students end up using two or three.

AI can explain a concept, quiz you on a lecture or turn your notes into cards. It can also be wrong, and nursing leaves little room for that. Check any drug dose, lab range or procedure against your textbook, your program's materials or your instructor. These tools are for studying, not for decisions about real patients.

StudyPDF also runs free practice quizzes in the browser, written by our team and not taken from real exams: NCLEX practice questions at studypdf.net/quizzes/nclex-practice-questions, HESI A2 at /quizzes/hesi-a2-practice-test, TEAS science at /quizzes/teas-science-practice-test, plus dosage calculation, medical terminology and anatomy and physiology.

Tool by tool

1. UWorld

Best for: NCLEX-style questions with a rationale for every answer

UWorld sells a question bank for the NCLEX-RN. Its own site describes thousands of exam-style questions, including Next Generation NCLEX items, with rationales and readiness practice tests.

Strengths

  • Questions written in the NCLEX style, with an explanation for each answer
  • Practice tests that show how ready you are, on the longer access plans

Limits

  • Questions only: it does not read your own slides or notes
  • Paid, and the price depends on how long you want access

2. NurseLearn

Best for: A nursing-specific AI tutor and NCLEX-style practice

NurseLearn turns recordings, PDFs, slides, images and notes into study guides, flashcards and practice questions, with a nursing AI tutor. Pro adds mock tests, roleplay modes and mastery analytics.

Strengths

  • Built for nursing: NCLEX-style questions, clinical scenarios and dosage practice
  • Takes lecture recordings as well as PDFs, slides and photos

Limits

  • The free plan is capped; mock tests and analytics need Pro
  • Built around nursing content, so less useful for other subjects
Official site

3. StudyPDF

That's us

Best for: Cards, quizzes and exams from your own slides and notes

StudyPDF builds flashcards, quizzes, practice exams and study guides from the files you upload. Bo, the tutor, answers from your material and cites the page. It tracks what you know per concept.

Strengths

  • Works from your own lectures, so practice matches what your program tests
  • Free browser quizzes for NCLEX, HESI A2 and TEAS
  • PDF export on every plan, Word and Anki (.apkg) on Pro and up

Limits

  • Not an NCLEX question bank; the free quizzes are short samplers
  • Weekly caps on every plan

4. Anki

Best for: Daily spaced-repetition review of drug and lab cards

Anki is a free, open-source flashcard app that schedules each review for you. Add-ons and shared decks extend it, and it works offline.

Strengths

  • Schedules the next review for when you are most likely to forget
  • Add-ons and a library of shared decks

Limits

  • You write or find every card yourself
  • The iPhone and iPad app is a paid app

5. RemNote

Best for: Notes and flashcards in one place

RemNote combines an outline-style note app with spaced-repetition flashcards. The higher paid plan adds AI features such as PDF-to-flashcards and quizzes.

Strengths

  • Notes and flashcards live together, so cards come straight from your notes
  • Image occlusion and an exam scheduler on Pro

Limits

  • The free plan caps annotated PDFs and AI credits
  • Pro has a small AI card quota; the full AI PDF tools need Pro with AI
Official site

6. NotebookLM

Best for: Asking questions across your lecture notes and readings

NotebookLM answers from the sources you upload and cites them. Google now shows it as Gemini Notebook. It can make study guides, flashcards and quizzes from your sources.

Strengths

  • Free to start, with answers that stay inside your sources
  • Study guides, audio overviews, flashcards and quizzes

Limits

  • Built for research and Q&A, not for tracking what you have mastered
  • Higher limits sit behind paid Google AI plans

How we picked

  • We started from the jobs a nursing student has: NCLEX practice, daily recall cards, questions on your own lectures, and notes.
  • Free tiers and prices come from each vendor's own site, checked October 2026. Prices change, so check before you pay.
  • We sort by use case, not by rank. Every tool has a real strength and a real limit, StudyPDF included.
  • Where we could not confirm a price on the vendor's own site, as with UWorld and NotebookLM, we give no number. Check it there.
  • None of these replaces your textbook, your instructor or clinical guidelines.
How StudyPDF helps

Study from your own material

Upload your lecture slides, readings and notes. StudyPDF builds flashcards, quizzes and practice exams from them, and Bo, the tutor, answers questions from your files with the page cited. Word and Anki export come with Pro and up. The free plan needs an account, no card, and gives you about 4 materials a week.

Questions and answers

What is the best AI for nursing students?

It depends on the job. A question bank such as UWorld suits NCLEX-style practice, Anki suits daily recall, and NotebookLM or StudyPDF suit questions about your own slides. NurseLearn is built for nursing from the start.

Can nursing students use AI to study for the NCLEX?

Yes, for explanations, practice questions and cards from your own notes. AI can be wrong, so check drug doses, lab values and procedures against your textbook or instructor, and pair it with a real question bank.

Is there a free AI study tool for nursing students?

Yes. Anki is free on desktop and Android, NotebookLM is free with a Google account, and StudyPDF and NurseLearn both have limited free plans. As of October 2026, check each site for current limits.

Where can I find free NCLEX, TEAS and HESI practice?

StudyPDF has free browser quizzes for NCLEX-RN, HESI A2 and the four TEAS sections, with an explanation for every answer. They are short samplers written by our team, not real exam questions.
