Tool by tool

Notion

Lecture notes, tasks and a page per course in one place

Notion is a workspace for notes, databases and tasks. Many students keep lecture notes, an assignment tracker and a page per course in it. Notion lists its Plus plan as free for students and educators who sign up with a school email.

Strengths

  • Notes, tasks and deadlines can sit in one database
  • Plus is free for students and educators with a school email, with larger uploads and longer page history

Limits

  • It stores and organizes your notes, it does not quiz you on them
  • AI features are a limited trial on the Free and Plus plans
Official site

Anki

Remembering a lot for a long time with spaced repetition

Anki is a free, open-source flashcard app that shows each card again when you are about to forget it. It has add-ons and shared decks, and it is popular with students who have a lot to memorize.

Strengths

  • Spaced repetition is built in, so reviews are scheduled for you
  • Add-ons and shared decks, and the desktop app and AnkiWeb sync cost nothing

Limits

  • You make or find every card yourself
  • The iPhone and iPad app is a paid one-time purchase
Official site

Quizlet

Ready-made flashcard sets and quick games for class vocabulary

Quizlet has millions of flashcard sets made by other students and teachers, plus study modes and games. Paid plans raise the limits on practice tests and Learn questions and remove ads.

Strengths

  • Search millions of sets from other students and teachers
  • Several study modes and games, and a free mobile app

Limits

  • Full access to practice tests and Learn questions needs Plus Unlimited
  • The 7-day free trial is for annual plans only, the monthly plan has none
Official site

Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM)

Asking questions across your own notes, slides and papers

Gemini Notebook, which Google renamed from NotebookLM in July 2026, answers from the sources you add. It can turn them into audio overviews and flashcards.

Strengths

  • Answers stay inside the sources you add
  • Eligible college students can claim a free year of Google AI Pro (US) or AI Plus until 31 December 2026

Limits

  • Built for questions on your sources; quizzes and a progress dashboard come from its newer study notebooks, with usage limits
  • Higher limits need a paid Google AI plan, which is sold only in some regions

StudyPDF

That's us

Quizzes, flashcards and a dated plan built from your own lectures

StudyPDF is in the group that works from your own material, next to Gemini Notebook. Add slides, scans, photos, YouTube lectures or links, and it builds quizzes, flashcards, practice exams and study guides, with the source cited on each question. It keeps a score per concept and can plan sessions up to an exam date. It does not replace a notes app, a focus timer or a calendar. The free plan needs an account but no credit card.

Strengths

  • Questions cite the page or timestamp they came from
  • A score per concept, plus a dated study plan up to your exam
  • Exports to PDF, plus Word and Anki on Pro and up

Limits

  • Not a notes app, a focus timer or a calendar
  • Weekly caps on every plan, and no library of decks made by other students

Forest

Staying off your phone during a study session

Forest is a focus timer where a tree grows while you stay focused. Leave the app, or open a blocked one, and the tree dies. Its Deep Focus app blocker is free.

Strengths

  • App blocking is free, not behind a paywall
  • Group sessions with friends, and the core timer works offline

Limits

  • It times and blocks, it does not help you learn anything
  • Extras like a custom app allowlist and focus analytics need Plus

Google Calendar

Putting exam dates, deadlines and study blocks in one view

Google Calendar holds your class times, exams and study blocks and syncs them across web, phone and watch. A task with a date and time shows up on the calendar too. It is the plain way to give a study plan real dates.

Strengths

  • Syncs across web, Android, iOS and watches
  • Tasks with a date and time appear on your calendar automatically

Limits

  • It schedules time, it does not teach, quiz or track what you know
  • Appointment booking beyond one page sits behind some paid Google plans

How we picked

  • We split studying into jobs: notes, remembering, working from your own material, focus and planning. Each job has at least one pick, so you can build a stack.
  • We checked each tool's own site in October 2026 for its free tier, price and platforms. Prices change, so check before you pay.
  • The search results for this question are mostly mixed lists, forum threads and older posts. We keep the jobs apart and date the facts.
  • We sort by job, not by rank. StudyPDF is one option, with real limits, in the group that works from your own material.
  • We did not rate handwriting apps or general chatbots here.

More on this

Pick one app per job, not one app for everything. A common stack is a notes app, a flashcard app and a calendar, with a focus timer only if your phone is the problem. Every extra app is one more place to keep up to date, so start with two and add a third when you feel the gap.

Most of these have a free tier that can carry a semester. Notion's Plus plan is free with a school email, Anki is free on desktop and Android, Forest and Gemini Notebook are free to start, and Quizlet has a free account. Eligible college students can also claim a free year of a Google AI plan for Gemini Notebook until 31 December 2026.

Apps only help if you test yourself and spread it out over days. Our guide at studypdf.net/answers/best-way-to-study explains the method that the flashcard and quiz tools below are built around.

Questions and answers

Which is the best study app?

There is no single best one, because studying has different jobs. Anki or Quizlet for flashcards, Notion for notes, Gemini Notebook or StudyPDF for questions about your own material, Forest for focus. Start with the job that is your biggest problem right now.

Which app is best for making study notes?

Notion is a strong choice for typed notes and a page per course, and its Plus plan is free with a school email. If you write by hand on a tablet, a handwriting app may suit you better. We did not rate those for this page.

What are the best free study apps?

Anki on desktop and Android, Notion's free plan, Forest's free timer, Google Calendar, Gemini Notebook and a free Quizlet account all cost nothing to start. StudyPDF's free plan gives about 4 materials a week. Paid plans mostly raise limits.

How can I focus on studying?

Put your phone out of reach first, because an app only helps if you use it. A timer like Forest blocks other apps for a set session, and its blocking is free. Work in short blocks with breaks. If the amount to learn is what overwhelms you, dates in a calendar help more than a timer.
