How to memorize the cranial nerves in 6 steps
Learn the 12 cranial nerves in layers. First the order, with a first-letter mnemonic: Oh Oh Oh To Touch And Feel Very Good Velvet, Such Heaven. Then the type, with a second one: Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says Big Brains Matter Most, where S is sensory, M motor and B both. Then one main job per nerve. Test yourself on a blank table over several days.
Each nerve comes with four facts: its number (I to XII), its name, its type and its function. Trying to learn all four at once is what makes the list feel impossible. Learning them in layers works better, because each layer hangs on the one before. Once the order is solid, the numbers come for free, and the type mnemonic lines up with the same order.
A few patterns cut the work in half. The three pure sensory nerves, I, II and VIII, carry special senses: smell, sight, and hearing and balance. The three eye movers, III, IV and VI, are all motor. A short formula sorts them: LR6 SO4, the lateral rectus is moved by VI, the superior oblique by IV, and the rest by III. Only V, VII, IX and X are both sensory and motor.
Mnemonics get the list into memory, but recall keeps it there. Write the full table from memory, check it and mark what you missed. Repeat the next day, a few days later and a week later. Drawing the underside of the brainstem with the nerves labeled, then covering the labels, links each name to its place, which helps on anatomy practicals.
| No. | Nerve | Type | Main job |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Olfactory | Sensory | Smell |
| II | Optic | Sensory | Vision |
| III | Oculomotor | Motor | Most eye movements, pupil, eyelid |
| IV | Trochlear | Motor | Eye movement (superior oblique) |
| V | Trigeminal | Both | Face sensation, chewing |
| VI | Abducens | Motor | Eye movement (lateral rectus) |
| VII | Facial | Both | Facial expression, taste front of tongue |
| VIII | Vestibulocochlear | Sensory | Hearing and balance |
| IX | Glossopharyngeal | Both | Taste back of tongue, swallowing |
| X | Vagus | Both | Heart, lungs, gut, voice |
| XI | Accessory | Motor | Shrugging shoulders, turning head |
| XII | Hypoglossal | Motor | Tongue movement |
- 1Learn the order with the name mnemonic. Say it out loud, then write the 12 names next to the numbers I to XII.
- 2Add the type mnemonic and write S, M or B next to each nerve.
- 3Lock in the shortcuts: I, II and VIII are pure sensory, III, IV and VI move the eye, and only V, VII, IX and X are both.
- 4Give every nerve one main job first. Add details later, such as taste from the front two-thirds of the tongue for VII and the back third for IX.
- 5Fill in a blank table from memory, check it and redo only the rows you got wrong.
- 6Review the next day, after 3 days and after a week, with flashcards and a labeled brainstem diagram with the labels hidden.
