How many times can you take the TEAS?
ATI sets no attempt limit and only a 48-hour minimum between exams, so the real limit comes from your school. Many nursing programs allow a few attempts a year, often two or three, and some require a wait of around 30 days between tests. Every completed, scored exam counts as an attempt, even if you do not submit the result. Ask your program for its policy before you register.
In more detail
ATI's help center says retake limits are set by each school, not by ATI. ATI requires only 48 hours after an exam before you can schedule a retake, and after that you can register for another date as soon as you like, subject to your school's rules. Each attempt is recorded on your ATI transcript, and schools receive your attempts when you submit that transcript to them.
Because every completed and scored exam counts, the first sitting is not a free trial. If you have taken the TEAS more than once, ATI lets you choose which set of results to share, but your program may still ask about every attempt or only accept a certain one. The pattern many programs use is a cap per year, a minimum wait between tests, or both. Neither is an ATI rule, so the school's page is the one that counts.
Plan around application deadlines, not just the cap. If your best case is a retake, count back from the deadline, leave time to study between tests, and use the Focused Review in your score report to target the topics you missed.
Who sets the TEAS retake rules
| Rule | Who decides |
|---|---|
| Maximum number of attempts | Your school or program |
| Waiting period between attempts | Your school or program (ATI only requires 48 hours) |
| Which attempt counts for admission | Your school or program |
| Record of every completed attempt | ATI transcript |
Step by step
- 1
Ask each program for its attempt limit per year and overall, its waiting period, and which score it counts.
- 2
Count back from each application deadline to see how many attempts actually fit.
- 3
Treat your first scored attempt as the real one and prepare for it fully.
- 4
If you retake, use the Focused Review from your score report to target the topics you missed.
- 5
Book the next date only when your practice scores are close to the program's target.
How StudyPDF helps
StudyPDF cannot lift an attempt limit, but it can help you make the first one count. Put your TEAS prep chapters, class notes and the questions you missed into a course, and it builds flashcards, quizzes and timed practice sets on your weak sections, then tracks per concept what still trips you up. You can also try the free TEAS practice test at TEAS Practice Test. The free plan covers about 4 materials a week, no card needed.
