How long is the Praxis Core and how many questions are on it?
The Praxis Core has 152 questions plus 2 essays across three subtests, with 4 hours 35 minutes of testing time in total. Reading is 56 questions in 85 minutes, Mathematics is 56 questions in 90 minutes, and Writing is 40 questions plus 2 essays in 100 minutes. You can take each subtest on its own or all three together as the Core Combined test (5752).
In more detail
Reading (5713) gives you about 90 seconds per question. Mathematics (5733) gives you about 96 seconds per question and an on-screen calculator, and most questions are multiple choice while some ask you to type a number. Writing (5723) has two clocks: 40 questions in 40 minutes, then two essays of 30 minutes each, one argumentative and one informative.
The Core Combined test (5752) puts all three in one sitting. ETS lists it at $150 for 2026-27, against $90 for one subtest and $270 for three registered together, so combining saves money if you are ready for all three. Check the ETS site for the current fee, and add check-in and the tutorial to the 4 hours 35 minutes.
ETS does not set passing scores. Your state or program does, and each subtest is scored from 100 to 200. Some states also accept SAT, ACT or GRE scores in place of the Core, so check your state's page before you register.

Step by step
- 1
Check what your state or program requires: which subtests, and whether SAT, ACT or GRE scores can stand in.
- 2
Decide between three separate sittings and the Core Combined test, based on how many subtests you are ready for.
- 3
Pace Reading and Mathematics at about 90 seconds per question, and flag anything that takes longer.
- 4
In Writing, spend the 40 minutes on the questions, then plan each essay for about 5 minutes, write for 20 and check for 5.
- 5
Take one full-length timed practice test so the 4 hours 35 minutes does not surprise you on test day.
