1. A student is writing a report on how often hospital staff wash their hands. Which source is the most reliable for current facts?
- A. A popular wellness blog post from 2009 with no listed author
- B. A social media thread where nurses share their opinions
- C. An advertisement for a hand sanitizer brand
- D. A 2025 study in a peer-reviewed nursing journal
Show answer and explanation
Answer: D. A 2025 study in a peer-reviewed nursing journal
A recent peer-reviewed study is checked by experts, names its authors and methods, and is current. The blog is old and anonymous, the thread is opinion, and the advertisement has a reason to slant the facts toward its product. TEAS Reading asks you to judge sources by expertise, date and bias.
2. Read the instructions: "Before the sample is taken, wash your hands. Next, label the tube with the patient's name. Then put on gloves. Finally, collect the sample and seal the tube." What is the third step?
- A. Wash your hands
- B. Label the tube
- C. Put on gloves
- D. Collect the sample
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C. Put on gloves
The signal words give the order: before (first), next (second), then (third), finally (fourth). Putting on gloves comes third. Following multistep directions by their transition words is a common TEAS Reading task.
3. Read the passage: "The town opened its first bike lane in 2019. Since then, the number of people biking to work has doubled, and two new bike shops have opened downtown. Car traffic on Main Street, however, has stayed about the same." Which statements are supported by the passage? Select all that apply.
Select all that apply.
- A. More people bike to work now than before 2019.
- B. The bike lane reduced car traffic on Main Street.
- C. New bike shops have opened since the lane was built.
- D. Most residents now prefer biking to driving.
- E. The bike lane was paid for by the bike shops.
Show answer and explanation
Answer: A. More people bike to work now than before 2019., C. New bike shops have opened since the lane was built.
The passage says commuter biking doubled and two shops opened, so those two are supported. It says car traffic stayed about the same, which contradicts the claim that it fell. Nothing in the passage tells us what most residents prefer or who paid for the lane, so those go beyond the text.
4. Complete the sentence.
A paragraph that describes rising flu cases in a school and then explains a new handwashing schedule that brought the cases down is organized by _____.
Options for blank 1: chronological order, problem and solution, compare and contrast, spatial order
Show answer and explanation
Answer: problem and solution
The paragraph names a problem (rising flu cases) and then a fix (the handwashing schedule), which is problem and solution structure. Chronological order would follow events by time only, and compare and contrast would weigh two things against each other. Spotting text structure falls under craft and structure on the TEAS.
5. A nursing program had 80 applicants last year and 100 this year. By what percent did the number of applicants increase?
- A. 25%
- B. 20%
- C. 80%
- D. 125%
Show answer and explanation
Answer: A. 25%
Percent change is the change divided by the original amount. The change is 100 minus 80, which is 20, and 20 divided by 80 is 0.25, or 25%. The common mistake is dividing by the new amount, 20 divided by 100, which gives 20%.
6. Solve the inequality: 4x + 5 > 21
- A. x > 4
- B. x < 4
- C. x > 6.5
- D. x > 16
Show answer and explanation
Answer: A. x > 4
Subtract 5 from both sides to get 4x > 16, then divide both sides by 4 to get x > 4. The inequality sign only flips when you multiply or divide by a negative number, which does not happen here.
7. Complete the sentence.
Using 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds, a child who weighs 66 pounds weighs _____ kilograms.
Options for blank 1: 14.5, 30, 63.8, 145.2
Show answer and explanation
Answer: 30
Pounds are the smaller unit, so the number of kilograms must be smaller. Divide: 66 divided by 2.2 equals 30. Multiplying instead gives 145.2, which is the classic error. A quick check that the answer moved in the right direction catches it.
8. What is the mean of the data set 4, 8, 9, 11, 13?
- A. 8
- B. 9
- C. 11
- D. 45
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B. 9
The mean is the sum divided by the number of values. 4 + 8 + 9 + 11 + 13 = 45, and 45 divided by 5 is 9. In this set the median is also 9, but that is a coincidence; the two measures are often different.
9. Which type of muscle tissue is under voluntary control?
- A. Cardiac muscle
- B. Smooth muscle
- C. Skeletal muscle
- D. Both cardiac and smooth muscle
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C. Skeletal muscle
Skeletal muscle is attached to bones and moves when you decide to move. Cardiac muscle in the heart and smooth muscle in organs such as the stomach, intestines and blood vessel walls work involuntarily. Skeletal and cardiac muscle are striated; smooth muscle is not.
10. Which structures are part of the central nervous system? Select all that apply.
Select all that apply.
- A. The brain
- B. The sciatic nerve
- C. The spinal cord
- D. The cranial nerves
- E. Sensory receptors in the skin
Show answer and explanation
Answer: A. The brain, C. The spinal cord
The central nervous system is the brain and the spinal cord only. Everything that branches out from them, including the cranial nerves, the spinal nerves such as the sciatic nerve, and the sensory receptors, belongs to the peripheral nervous system.
11. Two parents are both heterozygous for a trait (Bb), where B is dominant. What fraction of their offspring is expected to show the recessive trait?
- A. 0
- B. 1/4
- C. 1/2
- D. 3/4
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B. 1/4
A Punnett square for Bb x Bb gives BB, Bb, Bb and bb. Only bb, one of the four, shows the recessive trait, so the expected fraction is 1/4. The other three carry at least one dominant B and show the dominant trait.
12. Dry ice, which is solid carbon dioxide, turns straight into a gas at room temperature without becoming a liquid first. What is this phase change called?
- A. Evaporation
- B. Condensation
- C. Sublimation
- D. Deposition
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C. Sublimation
Sublimation is the change from solid directly to gas. Deposition is the reverse, gas directly to solid, as when frost forms. Evaporation is liquid to gas and condensation is gas to liquid. All four are physical changes: the carbon dioxide is still carbon dioxide.
13. Which sentence is punctuated correctly?
- A. After the lecture ended the students went to the lab.
- B. After the lecture, ended the students went to the lab.
- C. After the lecture ended the students, went to the lab.
- D. After the lecture ended, the students went to the lab.
Show answer and explanation
Answer: D. After the lecture ended, the students went to the lab.
An introductory dependent clause, here After the lecture ended, is followed by a comma before the main clause begins. The other options either leave the comma out or put it inside a clause, where it splits a subject from its verb.
14. Which of the following sentences are written in the active voice? Select all that apply.
Select all that apply.
- A. The nurse checked the patient's vital signs.
- B. The results were reviewed by the lab technician.
- C. Maria submitted her application on Friday.
- D. The vaccine was given to every student.
Show answer and explanation
Answer: A. The nurse checked the patient's vital signs., C. Maria submitted her application on Friday.
In the active voice the subject does the action: the nurse checked, Maria submitted. In the passive voice the subject receives the action, usually with a form of to be plus a past participle: the results were reviewed, the vaccine was given.
15. Complete the sentence.
In the word tonsillitis, the suffix -itis means _____.
Options for blank 1: removal, inflammation, study of, pain
Show answer and explanation
Answer: inflammation
The suffix -itis means inflammation, so tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils. Removal is -ectomy, study of is -ology, and pain is -algia. Medical word parts show up in the vocabulary questions of the English section.
What's on the ATI TEAS 7
The ATI TEAS has 170 questions and 209 minutes of testing time, split into four timed sections. Reading has 45 questions in 55 minutes. Math has 38 questions in 57 minutes. Science has 50 questions in 60 minutes, which makes it the longest section. English and Language Usage has 37 questions in 37 minutes, so it is the fastest paced at about one minute per question. These are the numbers ATI lists for the current version of the exam.
Not every question counts. 20 of the 170 are unscored pretest questions: 6 in Reading, 4 in Math, 6 in Science and 4 in English. That leaves 150 scored questions, and you cannot tell which ones are the pretest items, so treat every question as if it counts.
There is no single national passing score. According to ATI's help center, each school or program sets its own cut score, many weigh the TEAS alongside your GPA, and your report places you in one of five levels: Developmental, Basic, Proficient, Advanced or Exemplary. Retake rules and how long a score stays valid are also set by each program, so check the admissions page of every school you apply to before you book a date.
How to use this diagnostic
This page is the quick check across the whole exam. Its 15 questions roughly follow the weight of the real test: science and reading get the most, math is close behind, and English gets three. That is too few to predict a score, but enough to show which section is costing you points.
Take it in one sitting without notes, at about a minute per question, then read every explanation, including the ones you got right. Sort your misses by section. Two or more misses in one area is your signal: go to that section's full sampler. We have a 15-question test for each of the four sections, the Science, Math, Reading and English practice tests linked below, each built to the official content areas of that section.
A good study order for most people is weakest section first, Science second if it is not already your weakest, since it carries the most questions and anatomy and physiology alone is 18 of its 44 scored items. Retake this diagnostic after a week of focused study to see whether the weak section moved.
How StudyPDF builds full TEAS practice tests from your own materials
Fifteen questions show you where you are weak. They cannot get you ready on their own, and a generic question bank rarely matches what your prep book or your prerequisite courses emphasize.
StudyPDF works from your material instead. Upload your TEAS prep book, your anatomy class notes, lecture slides or photos of handwritten notes, and build a full practice exam or a quiz from those exact pages with the New material form. You choose the scope, the number of questions and the difficulty, for example only the cardiovascular chapter or only ratios and proportions. Every question cites where it comes from, and Bo, the study agent, explains any answer you got wrong. Your results feed a per-concept picture of what you know, so the next quiz can aim at your weakest concepts.
You do not need a document to start. If you have nothing to upload, name a topic instead, for example TEAS math word problems or the endocrine system, and StudyPDF sets up the key concepts so you can quiz yourself on them. Starting is free, and the free plan covers about four new materials a week. Every question on this page was written by the StudyPDF team to the published TEAS content areas, none is taken from a real exam or from ATI's materials, and StudyPDF is not affiliated with ATI.
