Vocabulary template: free printable word list
This vocabulary template is a printable word list: the word on the left, the meaning and an example sentence on the right, with a fold line in the middle. Fill it in, then fold the sheet to hide one column and test yourself, or cut it into cards. Write every word inside a sentence and review it over several days.
Prints on one A4 or Letter page without the website around it. Pick "Save as PDF" in the print dialog to get a PDF.

How to use it
- 1
Print the blank sheet on A4 or Letter paper. Write the language and the unit at the top.
- 2
Collect words from something you actually met: a lesson, a text, a song, a chapter. Skip lists of words you will never see again.
- 3
Write the word on the left, with its article or word type if it has one. On the right, write the meaning in your own language and a short example sentence.
- 4
Fold along the middle line so only the left column shows. Say the meaning and a sentence out loud, then unfold to check. Spell the word from memory.
- 5
Next time hide the other column: read the meaning and recall the word. Cut out the words you missed as cards for extra rounds.
- 6
Review the sheet the next day, then after three days and after a week. Put new words on a new sheet instead of squeezing them in.

A vocabulary list works when each entry holds more than a translation. A word with no sentence around it is hard to use later. So the right-hand side has two parts: the meaning in your own language and one example sentence, ideally from something you really read or heard. If your language has articles, genders or word types, add them next to the word.
The sheet has two uses. Fill it in like a normal list and fold along the middle line to hide the meaning, so you can test yourself word by word. Or cut it into cards and shuffle them. Both beat rereading a list, because you try to recall the answer before you see it. This page is built for vocabulary and language learning. For other subjects, the flashcard template fits better.
Keep each sheet short. Eight to ten words is a good size to learn, and a fresh sheet for every study session is easier to review than one endless page.

Questions and answers
How do I make a vocabulary list?
Pick words from something you really read or heard, then write the word in one column and its meaning plus an example sentence in the other. Print the sheet on this page, or rule two columns in a notebook. Keep each list to about ten words.
How do I take notes for vocabulary?
For every word write the word itself, its meaning in your own language, one sentence in context and, if the language has them, the article, gender or word type. Group words by lesson or topic rather than alphabetically, so they connect.
How can I learn vocabulary easily?
Little and often. Cover the meaning and try to recall it before you look, say the word and the sentence out loud, and review after a day, three days and a week. Using a new word in a sentence of your own helps it stick.
Is there a vocabulary template in Word or Google Docs?
You can insert a table with two columns and about ten rows and print it. The sheet on this page already has that layout and also folds or cuts into cards, so one printout covers both a list and a card set.
Can StudyPDF make vocabulary flashcards from a word list?
Yes. Upload the list or a textbook chapter, press New material and pick Flashcards. The cards come out in the language of your course or request, each one citing its source page, and you choose how many you want.
