What is an AI notes generator?
An AI notes generator reads your PDF, slides, scan or lecture video and writes structured study notes from it: headings, key terms, definitions and the main points of each section. With StudyPDF you upload your files, press New material, pick Summary, Study guide or Cornell notes, and get notes with every point cited to its source page.
It is a note maker for material you already have. It is not a meeting recorder or a replacement for your notebook. You need a free account, no card, and your first notes take a few minutes.
Example: what generated notes look like
Say you upload a chapter on cell respiration and choose Study guide. One section of the notes comes out roughly like this:
Glycolysis Key idea: splits one glucose molecule into two pyruvate molecules in the cytoplasm. Net result: 2 ATP and 2 NADH. It needs no oxygen. Source: Lecture 4, page 12
Self-check: Where does glycolysis happen, and what does it produce?
You get a block like this for every topic in the chapter, with an overview at the top and takeaways at the end. Click the source to open page 12 and check the line against your slides.
Cornell-style notes, if you want them
Pick Cornell notes in the New material form and StudyPDF fills the classic three zones from your file: cue questions on the left, notes on the right and a short summary for each section. One section looks like this:
Cue: What does glycolysis produce? Notes: 2 pyruvate, 2 NADH and a net gain of 2 ATP. It happens in the cytoplasm and needs no oxygen. Summary: Glycolysis is the first step of respiration and runs without oxygen.
To study, cover the notes column and answer each cue from memory, then show the notes to check yourself. Download the result as a ruled Cornell PDF if you want a paper copy.
Download your lecture notes as PDF or Word
Every set of notes you generate can be downloaded. PDF is available on every plan, Free included, and prints cleanly. Summaries and study guides also download as Word (.docx) on Pro and up, so you can edit them or add your own notes. Cornell notes download as PDF. Flashcards from the same file also export to Anki (.apkg) on Pro and up.
Downloaded files open without a connection, so you can read them on a train or print them for the library. If you would rather not send files around, share the course by link instead. A shared course holds up to 3 people on Free, 10 on Pro and 30 on Ultra.
AI notes generator, chatbot or typing by hand?
Typing by hand is the slowest option and works best for short lectures you attend live. A general chatbot can summarize text you paste in, but it does not know your course and usually gives no page citations. An AI notes generator built for studying reads your whole file, splits it into topics, cites the page for each point and keeps the notes next to your flashcards and quizzes.
Use whichever fits. Many students take a few notes in class and generate the rest from the slides and readings afterward.
What makes a good AI notes generator
A good AI notes generator works from your files, not from the open internet. StudyPDF splits your course into topics and concepts, then writes each note from the passages of your own material. That is why every point can carry a citation, and why the notes match what your lecturer actually taught.
A note generator should also let you choose the shape. A summary gives you the short version and the key points. A study guide gives you an overview, sections with key concepts, self-check questions and takeaways. Cornell notes give you cue questions, notes and a summary per section. Same file, three ways to read it.
As an AI note maker it is built for studying, not for recording meetings. It does not listen to your lecture live or replace your notebook. It turns files you already have, such as slides, readings and recorded lectures on YouTube, into notes you can revise from.
Notes are the first step, not the last. From the same files you can make flashcards, quizzes and practice exams in the same course. Your answers feed a mastery score per concept, so you see which topics still need work. Bo, the tutor in your course, answers questions about your notes with citations.

What you get from the AI note maker
A note generator is only useful if you can trust the notes and use them. Here is what StudyPDF adds:
- Key concepts, definitions and arguments, not a random pile of sentences
- Every point links to its source page, so you can check it in one click
- You choose how long the notes are: brief, standard or detailed
- Notes come out in the language of your course
- Notes sit in your course next to flashcards, quizzes and exams from the same files
Questions and answers
How do I generate notes with AI?
Open a course in StudyPDF and upload your PDF, slides, scan or a YouTube link. Press New material and pick Summary, Study guide or Cornell notes. Choose the scope and length, then create. The notes open in a few minutes with every point cited to its page, and you can download them as PDF.
Is there a free AI notes generator?
Yes. You need a free account, no card, and there is no time limit. Free gives you about 4 materials a week, 2 courses, 3 files per upload and 200 pages per file. Pro gives about 35 a week and 10 courses, Ultra gives more. Every plan is capped weekly.
What is the difference between an AI notes generator and an AI note maker?
None in practice. Both names describe a tool that reads your material and writes the notes for you. StudyPDF is both: it reads your files, splits them into topics and writes notes as a summary, a study guide or Cornell notes, with a citation on every point.
9 more questions
Can I generate notes from a YouTube lecture?
Yes. Paste the YouTube link into your course. StudyPDF reads the transcript, and every point in your notes links to the exact second in the video, so you can jump to the part that was explained.
What is a note AI tool, and how is it different from an AI note taker?
An AI note taker usually records a meeting or call and transcribes it. A note AI tool like StudyPDF works from files you upload, such as PDFs, slides and lecture videos, and writes study notes from them. If you need to record a live meeting, use a recorder. If you need notes from slides and readings, use a notes generator.
Can AI make Cornell notes?
Yes. Pick Cornell notes in the New material form and StudyPDF fills cue questions, notes and a summary for each section of your file. You can cover the notes and answer the cues from memory, or download a ruled Cornell PDF.
Can I download my notes?
Yes. PDF download is on every plan, including Free. Summaries and study guides also download as Word (.docx) on Pro and up, and flashcards from the same file can also export to Anki (.apkg) on Pro and up. You can also share the course by link instead of sending files.
What files and sources work?
PDFs, including scans and handwriting, plus PowerPoint, Word, photos, YouTube videos and websites. You can add several at once. Free takes up to 3 files per upload and 200 pages per file.
How accurate are the notes?
The notes are written from your own material, and every point cites the page or timestamp it came from, so you can check it. AI can still make mistakes, so read the notes against your source before an exam.
How is this different from asking a general chatbot for notes?
A general chatbot only sees what you paste in. StudyPDF knows your whole course, writes each note from your own pages, cites its sources and keeps the notes next to flashcards, quizzes and exams made from the same files.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. StudyPDF has apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, and it also runs in the browser. Your courses and notes are the same everywhere.
Can I share my notes with classmates?
Yes. Share the course by link. A shared course holds up to 3 people on Free, 10 on Pro and 30 on Ultra, and classmates can open it in a browser.
