Obsidian vs OneNote: which is better for students?

Pick OneNote if you write by hand, like a freeform page and want free sync through a Microsoft account. Pick Obsidian if you type your notes and want links between lectures, plain files you own and a free app. Obsidian has no built-in pen, and its Sync costs $4 a month. Neither quizzes you out of the box. StudyPDF is a third option for that.

Who should pick which

OneNote

Pick OneNote if you write or draw with a pen, like a freeform page, or want free sync and sharing through a Microsoft account.

OneNote is Microsoft's notebook app. A page is a freeform canvas where you can type, draw with a pen, paste slides and attach files. Notebooks sync through OneDrive, and you can share them for group work.

Strengths

  • Freeform pages: click anywhere, type, paste a slide, write or draw on it
  • Ink and drawing tools are built in, and the iPad app has rich inking
  • Notebooks, sections and pages work like a binder, one per course
  • Free on every platform, with sharing for group work

Limits

  • Notes sit in OneNote's own notebooks, so leaving means an export or an importer
  • Free sync uses your 5 GB Microsoft storage, shared with OneDrive and Outlook.com
  • Copilot and other premium features need a Microsoft 365 subscription

Obsidian

Pick Obsidian if you type most of your notes, want them as files you own, and like linking ideas across lectures and semesters.

Obsidian is a Markdown notes app that saves every note as a plain file in a folder on your device. You link notes, see the links as a graph, and add features with community plugins.

Strengths

  • Fast and fully offline, even with thousands of notes
  • Plain Markdown files, so there is no lock-in and no export step
  • Backlinks and the graph show how topics connect across a course
  • Over 1,000 plugins, some for flashcards, and an Importer for OneNote notebooks

Limits

  • No built-in pen: iPad Scribble converts handwriting, drawing needs plugins
  • Sync across devices is $4 a month (1 GB, 5 MB per file) unless you set up your own
  • More setup than OneNote: folders, plugins and habits are yours to build

StudyPDF

That's us

Quizzes, flashcards and a study plan from notes you export or scan

Pick StudyPDF next to either app when exams come: export or photograph your notes and get quizzes and flashcards that cite the page.

Most students keep notes in OneNote or Obsidian and study by rereading them. StudyPDF turns those notes into practice. Export a OneNote page as a PDF, export a note from Obsidian, or photograph your handwriting, upload it with your slides, and get flashcards, a quiz or a practice exam that cite the page. Your answers show which concepts you already know. A free account needs no credit card.

Strengths

  • Reads a OneNote page exported as PDF, a note exported from Obsidian, a scan or a photo
  • Tracks which concepts you know across every file in a course
  • Exports flashcards to Anki (.apkg) on Pro and up, plus Word and print sheets

Limits

  • Not a place to write, draw or link notes
  • Weekly caps on every plan, and handwriting reads best when it is legible

More on this

They are built for different hands. OneNote is Microsoft's notebook: notebooks, sections and pages, where a page is a freeform canvas. You click anywhere to type, paste a slide, draw or write with a pen. Obsidian is an editor for Markdown files in a folder on your device. You link notes with [[double brackets]], and a graph shows how your lecture topics connect. Obsidian has no pen of its own. On an iPad, Scribble turns handwriting into text, and community plugins add drawing.

Both are free to start, as of October 2026. Microsoft says every supported version of OneNote is free, with premium features such as Copilot in the desktop apps behind Microsoft 365 (Personal is $9.99 a month in the US). Notebooks sync through OneDrive, and a free account has 5 GB shared with your files and photos. Obsidian is free with no account. You pay for sync: Sync Standard is $4 a month billed yearly, with 1 GB and a 5 MB limit per file. Students get 40% off.

The step neither app takes on its own is testing you, though Obsidian plugins can add flashcards and spaced repetition. Notes help you understand a lecture, but the exam asks you to recall it. Moving between the two is easy enough: Obsidian's Importer plugin converts OneNote notebooks to Markdown, and OneNote can export a page as a PDF. That PDF, or a photo of your handwriting, is all a study tool needs to build practice from.

Questions and answers

Is Obsidian or OneNote better for students?

Neither wins everywhere. OneNote suits handwritten notes, slides you want to mark up and sharing with a study group. Obsidian suits typed notes you want to link across lectures, in files you own. Neither tests you out of the box (Obsidian plugins can add flashcards), so for exams add a study tool.

Can I transfer my notes from OneNote to Obsidian?

Yes. Obsidian's Importer plugin converts OneNote to Markdown. You can sign in with your Microsoft account, which imports notebooks you own that are synced to OneDrive, or import exported .one and .onepkg files without an account. Notebooks shared with you are not supported.

Is OneNote being discontinued?

No. Microsoft ended support for the OneNote for Windows 10 app on October 14, 2025. It is read-only now, and the OneNote app on Windows replaces it. Microsoft's OneNote page still lists ink, Copilot and voice transcription as of October 2026.

Are Obsidian and OneNote free?

Both start free, as of October 2026. OneNote is free to download and use, with Microsoft 365 for premium features. Obsidian is free with no account. Sync Standard costs $4 a month billed yearly (1 GB), Sync Plus $8 (10 GB), and students get 40% off.

Can Obsidian handwrite like OneNote?

Not on its own. Obsidian has no built-in pen. On an iPad you can write with Scribble, which turns handwriting into typed text, and community plugins add drawing and Apple Pencil support. For ink-first notes, OneNote or a handwriting app is the easier fit.
