Notion is a cloud workspace of pages, databases and templates. You can view the same assignment list as a table, a board or a calendar, and share pages with classmates. Notion AI is only a limited trial on the Free and Plus plans.

Strengths

  • Real-time shared pages and many templates, good for group projects
  • Free Education Plan with larger uploads and 30 days of history
  • Offline access to the pages you download in advance

OneNote

Pick OneNote if you write by hand, sketch diagrams or want a free notebook that works the same on a laptop, a tablet and a phone.

OneNote is Microsoft's notebook app: notebooks, sections and pages on a freeform canvas where you can type, draw with a pen, clip a screenshot or record audio. It syncs through OneDrive. Microsoft ended support for the old OneNote for Windows 10 app in October 2025.

Strengths

  • Click anywhere to type, draw or paste; handwriting with a pen feels natural
  • Free to use, with notebooks that sync to your other devices
  • Notebooks can be shared and edited together with classmates

Limits

  • No databases or calendar views for tracking deadlines
  • Copilot, voice transcription and other premium features need a Microsoft 365 plan
  • The old Windows 10 app is out of support, so use the current OneNote

StudyPDF

That's us

Turning exported or photographed notes into flashcards and quizzes

Pick StudyPDF next to either one when exams come: upload your notes, get flashcards and quizzes that cite the page, and see which concepts you still miss.

Most students keep notes in Notion or OneNote and still study by rereading them. StudyPDF turns those notes into practice. Export a Notion or OneNote page, or photograph a handwritten one, upload it with your lecture slides, and get flashcards, a quiz or a practice exam that cite the page. Every answer feeds a picture of which concepts you already know. A free account needs no credit card.

Strengths

  • Reads notes exported from Notion or OneNote, plus slides, scans and photos of handwriting
  • Tracks which concepts you know across every file in a course
  • Exports flashcards to Anki (.apkg) on Pro and up, plus Word and print sheets

Limits

  • Not a place to write, draw or organize notes
  • Weekly caps on every plan

More on this

They start from different ideas. OneNote is a digital binder: notebooks hold sections, sections hold pages, and a page is a freeform canvas where you click anywhere to type, draw with a pen, paste a screenshot or record audio. Notion is a workspace of blocks and databases. A page is a stack of blocks, and a database shows the same assignments as a table, a board or a calendar.

Prices, as of October 2026. OneNote is free to download and use on Windows, Mac, the web, iPhone, iPad and Android. Microsoft 365 Personal unlocks extras like Copilot and costs $9.99 a month in the US. Your cloud notebooks live in OneDrive, which gives you 5 GB free. Notion's Free plan has no page cap for one person, with 5 MB uploads and 7 days of history. Students at an accredited college or university can claim the free Education Plan with a school email: larger uploads and 30 days of history for one member. Paid Plus starts at $10 a month.

Neither app checks whether you remember anything. Notes help you understand a lecture, but exams test recall, and in both apps you would have to write every question yourself. That is the gap a study tool fills: export a page or photograph a notebook and let it build flashcards and quizzes. Take notes where you are comfortable, then study in a tool made for practice.

Questions and answers

What's better, OneNote or Notion?

It depends on how you take notes. OneNote is better for handwriting, freeform pages and a notebook that is free to use. Notion is better for typed notes mixed with deadlines, calendars and shared pages. For a pen and a tablet, pick OneNote. For a semester dashboard, pick Notion. Many students use both.

Is Notion a good tool for university students?

Yes, if you type your notes and like organizing. Notion's databases track assignments and exams, and students at accredited colleges and universities can claim the free Education Plan with a school email. It fits less well if you mostly handwrite, and it is easy to build a system you never study from.

Are Notion and OneNote free?

Yes, both have a free tier, as of October 2026. OneNote is free to download and use, with 5 GB of free OneDrive storage and optional Microsoft 365 for extras like Copilot. Notion's Free plan has no page cap for one person, with 5 MB uploads and 7 days of history. Students can claim the free Education Plan.

Is Microsoft replacing OneNote?

No. OneNote is still an active Microsoft app. What ended is support for the old OneNote for Windows 10 app, in October 2025. If you used that one, install the current OneNote app, which opens your cloud notebooks too.

What are the disadvantages of Notion?

For students, mainly these: it is cloud-first, so offline use needs pages you downloaded in advance. The Free plan caps uploads at 5 MB per file and history at 7 days. It is built for typed blocks, not pen notes, and it is easy to spend more time building pages than studying. The Education Plan lifts the upload and history limits.
