Grok vs ChatGPT: which is better for studying?

Pick ChatGPT for studying: study mode is on every plan, it quizzes you from the notes you upload, and Plus costs $20 against $30 for Grok Premium. Pick Grok if you want live answers from the web and X, voice chat and a free plan to try. Neither knows your whole course. For exam prep from your own files, StudyPDF is a third option.

Who should pick which

Grok

Pick Grok if your questions are about what is happening now, you already use X, or you want a free assistant with voice chat to try before you pay.

Grok is the AI assistant from SpaceXSI. It searches the web and X live, reads uploaded files, talks by voice and makes images. It lists no study or tutor mode, so you steer the quizzing yourself.

Strengths

  • Searches the web and X live, so it knows what happened this morning
  • File analysis, voice chats, memory across chats and 30+ languages
  • Plus starts at $8 a month and bundles X benefits if you already use X

Limits

  • No study or tutor mode is listed on its official pages
  • The Free plan is capped; paid plans share a weekly pool and extra use costs top-ups
  • The latest Grok models and Grok Bot are listed from Premium ($30), not Plus

ChatGPT

Pick ChatGPT if you want a built-in study mode, quizzes from your uploaded notes and the cheaper paid plan. For most students it is the safer default.

ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant. It explains, writes, codes, makes images, searches the web and reads files you upload. Study mode turns it into a tutor that asks questions back.

Strengths

  • Study mode on every plan, including Free, with hints instead of answers
  • Quizzes you one question at a time from uploaded notes, slides and photos
  • Plus costs $20 a month, $10 less than Grok Premium

Limits

  • Study mode is not available inside Projects, custom GPTs or Temporary Chats
  • Free uploads, images and voice are capped, and Free and Go can show ads in some countries
  • Can still be wrong about your lecture, so check the passage in your file

StudyPDF

That's us

Being tested on your own course files, with mastery per concept

Pick StudyPDF if the goal is the exam: cards, quizzes and practice exams from your own files, with weak concepts tracked.

Grok and ChatGPT are general assistants. They explain well, but neither keeps track of what you know across a whole course. StudyPDF splits your slides and notes into topics and concepts, builds flashcards, quizzes and practice exams from them, and shows which concepts are still weak. Bo, the tutor, answers from your files and cites the page. The free plan needs an account, no credit card.

Strengths

  • Splits your course into topics and concepts and scores each one
  • Practice exams with an optional timer and a graded report
  • PDF export on every plan, Word and Anki (.apkg) on Pro and up

Limits

  • Not a general assistant for coding or writing essays
  • Weekly caps on every plan

More on this

Grok is built by SpaceXSI, ChatGPT by OpenAI. Both read uploaded files, search the web, talk by voice and run on web, iPhone and Android. The models change every few months, so we compare what stays put: plans, prices and study tools. Everything here was checked on the official sites on October 16, 2026. Many guides still talk about SuperGrok at $30 a month, but new Grok customers now choose from Free, Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra.

The biggest difference for a student is the study tools. ChatGPT has a study mode on every plan: it asks questions, gives hints and can quiz you from the notes you upload. Grok's official pages list no study mode. Grok's edge is live search across the web and X, which helps for news, current events and trends, less so for a lecture from last spring. On price, ChatGPT runs $0, about $8 and $20; Grok runs $0, $8 and $30.

A routine that works with either: upload one lecture, ask for questions one at a time, and ask which passage each answer comes from. Then check it in your file. Neither tool keeps score of what you know across a whole course; that part is up to you. Check your school's AI rules before you use either for graded work.

Questions and answers

Is Grok better than ChatGPT for studying?

For most students, ChatGPT is the easier pick. Study mode is on every plan, asks you questions and works with notes you upload; Grok's official pages list no study or tutor mode. Grok is better when you need live information from the web or X. Try both free plans with the same lecture.

Is Grok more expensive than ChatGPT?

On the main plan, yes. As of October 16, 2026, ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and Grok Premium is $30. Grok Plus at $8 a month sits close to ChatGPT Go (about $8; it varies by country). Both have a free plan and much pricier tiers for heavy use.

Is Grok more reliable than ChatGPT?

Neither is reliable enough to trust blindly. OpenAI's own help page says study mode can make mistakes, and Grok's live search mixes posts from X with web sources. For course content, ask for the passage and check it in your own notes.

What are the limits of Grok?

The Free plan has limited chat and agent requests. Paid plans share a weekly usage pool, and if you need more you buy top-ups. Plus does not include Grok Bot, the latest models are listed from Premium, and the official pages list no study mode.

Is there a student discount for ChatGPT or Grok?

ChatGPT has an offer for eligible US college students: four free months of Plus, claim by October 31, 2026, then $20 a month unless you cancel. We found no student offer on Grok's official pricing pages. Check in the app before you pay.
