Who should pick which

Microsoft Copilot

Pick Copilot if your notes are in OneNote, you write in Word, or your school gives you Copilot Chat with your school account.

Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant. It is a chat app, a helper inside Word, OneNote, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook with a Microsoft 365 plan, and a school version called Copilot Chat. In OneNote it can summarize pages, make task lists and rewrite notes.

Strengths

  • Works inside OneNote and Word, so you summarize and rewrite notes where they already live
  • Student price: Microsoft 365 Personal with Copilot for $4.99 a month with verified student status
  • A school account can unlock Copilot Chat at no extra cost, if your school turns it on
  • Schools that license it can give students 13 and older the Study & Learn agent

Limits

  • The name covers several products, so what you get depends on your plan, account and app
  • In Microsoft 365, Copilot features are for the subscription owner only, not family members
  • Free chat has usage limits, and school features only work if your school enables them

ChatGPT

Pick ChatGPT if you want one tutor for any subject and any file, with study mode on every plan and no tie to Microsoft apps.

ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant. You open one app, upload files or paste text, and it explains, writes, codes and makes images. Study mode turns it into a tutor that asks questions back.

Strengths

  • Study mode on all four plans, including the free one
  • Works with any file or text, whatever apps you use for notes
  • Projects keep one course's chats and files together, on the free plan too
  • Go at $8 is the cheapest paid step; eligible US students can claim four free months until Oct 31, 2026

Limits

  • Answers from broad knowledge, so it can be wrong about your lecture
  • Not built into OneNote or Word, so notes get copied or uploaded first
  • Free plan limits file uploads, deep research and image creation

The free plan needs an account, no credit card.

Strengths

More on this

ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant: one app you open and talk to. Copilot is Microsoft's name for a few different things: a free chat app, helpers inside Word, OneNote and the other Microsoft 365 apps, and a school version your university may switch on. So which Copilot you can use matters more than the brand. Microsoft says its school chat runs on GPT-5, so on plain questions the two can feel alike.

Your account decides what you get. A personal Microsoft account gets the free Copilot chat, with limits. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month and adds Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook. College students can get Personal for $4.99 a month after verifying student status (US offer, other countries differ). A school account may get Copilot Chat at no extra cost if your school turns it on. ChatGPT is simpler: Free, Go at $8, Plus at $20, with study mode on every plan.

A routine that works with either one: take one lecture, ask for a short summary, then ask to be quizzed one question at a time. Ask for the passage each answer rests on and check it in your own file. Neither tool tracks what you know across a whole course. Eligible US college students can also claim four free months of a paid ChatGPT plan until October 31, 2026; it renews at $20 a month unless you cancel.

Questions and answers

Is Copilot better than ChatGPT?

Neither wins everywhere. Copilot is better when the work happens inside Microsoft 365, such as summarizing a OneNote page or rewriting a Word draft. ChatGPT is better as a stand-alone tutor, with study mode on every plan. Microsoft says its school chat runs on GPT-5, so plain questions can get similar answers from both.

Is Copilot free for students?

Partly. The Copilot chat has a free version with limits. With a school account, Copilot Chat can be free if your school switches it on; Microsoft lists it for higher education students aged 13 and older. In the Microsoft 365 apps, college students can get Personal for $4.99 a month on Microsoft's US page (as of October 2026).

How much do Copilot and ChatGPT cost?

As of October 2026, US prices: ChatGPT Free is $0, Go $8, Plus $20 and Pro from $100 a month. Copilot chat is free with limits. Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month, Premium $19.99 and Pro $99.99. College students can get Personal for $4.99.

Why don't people like Copilot?

Part of the confusion is the name. It covers a free chat app, paid Microsoft 365 plans and school versions, and what you see depends on your plan, account and app. Microsoft also notes that usage limits apply and that some AI features are for the subscription owner only. Check what your own account includes before you judge it.

Is ChatGPT or Copilot safer?

It depends on the account. Microsoft says data in its school Copilot is isolated in your school's Microsoft 365 tenant and never used to train foundation models. With ChatGPT, look at the data controls in settings. With either one, do not paste other people's personal data or exam material you may not share.
