Claude vs Perplexity: which is better for studying?

Use Perplexity to find sources and check facts: every answer links to the pages it used, and an Academic search covers papers. Use Claude to understand and write: it explains a reading step by step and gives detailed feedback on drafts. Both Pro plans cost $20 a month. To be tested on your own course files, StudyPDF is a third option.

Who should pick which

Claude

Pick Claude if you need to understand a hard reading or improve a draft: step-by-step explanations, detailed feedback and a Learning style that asks you questions.

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. It reads long texts and files, explains them step by step and gives detailed feedback on writing. The Learning style turns it into a tutor that asks questions back.

Strengths

  • Explains dense readings in plain, ordered steps
  • Detailed, specific feedback on essays and reports
  • Web search with citations on the free plan; Research for longer reports on Pro
  • Projects keep one course's files together, up to 5 on the free plan

Limits

  • No built-in quizzes, flashcard decks or progress tracking
  • No dedicated paper search like Perplexity's Academic mode
  • Usage limits can cut a long session short; no standard student discount on Pro
Official site

Perplexity

Pick Perplexity if you write papers and need sources fast: it searches on every question, cites every answer and has an Academic search. Verified students pay $10 a month.

Perplexity is an answer engine. It searches the web for each question and shows citations next to the answer. Pro adds a choice of models from several makers, deeper research and more uploads.

Strengths

  • Citations on every answer, so you can open the source and check it
  • An Academic search for scholarly sources
  • Pro lets you pick the model behind an answer, including one from Anthropic
  • Verified students pay $10 a month for Education Pro and get Learn Mode, which also builds quizzes and flashcards

Limits

  • Answers from web pages, not your lecture, unless you upload a file
  • The free plan is tight: 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 research query a month
  • A citation is a link, not proof the claim is right; no score per concept across a course

StudyPDF

That's us

Being tested on your own course files, with mastery per concept

Pick StudyPDF if the goal is the exam and the material is your own: flashcards, quizzes and practice exams from your files, with weak concepts tracked.

Perplexity answers from the web. Claude answers from the web or its training. Neither tracks which concepts of your course you have mastered. For answers from your own slides and notes, a tool built on your files fits better. StudyPDF splits them into topics and concepts, builds flashcards, quizzes and practice exams, and shows which concepts are still weak. Bo answers from your files and cites the page. The free plan needs an account, no credit card.

Strengths

  • Splits your course into topics and concepts and scores each one
  • Practice exams with an optional timer and a graded report
  • PDF export on every plan, Word and Anki (.apkg) on Pro and up

Limits

  • Not a general assistant for coding or writing essays
  • Weekly caps on every plan

More on this

Perplexity is an answer engine. It starts from a web search for each question and puts citations next to the answer. Claude, from Anthropic, is a general assistant that reads, explains, writes and codes, and it searches the web when a question needs it. Both read files you upload and run on web, desktop and phone. They also overlap: Perplexity Pro lets you pick between models from several makers, and one of them is from Anthropic. So this page compares the products around the models, not the models.

A common claim is that Claude cannot search the web or cite sources. As of October 2026 that is out of date: web search is on Claude's free plan, and a search answer comes with citations and source links. What differs is the default. Perplexity searches every time and is built around its sources. Claude searches when it helps, or when you turn search on, and Research, its longer multi-step mode, is on Pro. For a literature search, Perplexity's Academic search is the more direct tool.

For studying, both read uploaded files and both have a tutor setting: Claude's Learning style asks you questions, and Perplexity's Learn Mode is a toggle for verified students. Prices match: Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, on both. Perplexity adds Education Pro for $10 a month after a SheerID check; Claude has no standard student discount on Pro. A routine that uses both: find and open sources in Perplexity, then read and draft in Claude. A citation is a link to a page, not proof that a claim is right. Neither tool tracks what you know across a whole course.

Questions and answers

Is Claude or Perplexity better for research papers?

Use both, for different steps. Perplexity is the faster way to find sources: it searches on every question, cites every answer and has an Academic search for scholarly material. Claude is better at what comes after: reading a long paper closely, explaining the method and giving feedback on your draft. Open every source before you cite it, whichever tool found it.

Does Claude cite sources like Perplexity?

Yes, when it searches the web. Claude's help center says a web search answer includes citations and source links, and web search is on the free plan. The difference is the default: Perplexity searches every time, Claude searches when it helps or when you turn search on. A citation is only a link, so check the page.

Does Claude offer a student discount?

Not to individuals. As of October 2026, Claude's help center says there is no standard discount on Pro or Max. The free plan stays free, and universities can offer Claude for Education to their students. Perplexity sells Education Pro for $10 a month to verified students and educators.

How much do Claude and Perplexity cost?

As of October 2026 both have a free plan. Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro each cost $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 a year). For heavy use, Claude Max starts at $100 a month and Perplexity Max costs $200 a month. Prices can differ by country.

Does Perplexity use Claude?

On Pro you can pick the model behind an answer, and the list includes a Claude model next to models from OpenAI and Google. So you can use Claude's model inside Perplexity's search. The app around the model stays Perplexity's: its search, its citations and its own Learn Mode.
