How do you study for AP Biology?

Study AP Biology unit by unit, and practice the free-response style from the start. The exam has 60 multiple-choice questions and 6 free-response questions, and a lot of it asks you to read data and design experiments, not just recall facts. Learn each unit's core ideas, draw the processes from memory, and drill graph and experiment questions with the official rubrics.

AP Biology has eight units, from the chemistry of life to ecology. Natural Selection, Cellular Energetics and Gene Expression and Regulation carry the most weight, so give them extra days. The units build on each other, so a gap in Unit 2 or 3 will cost you again later.

The test mixes recall with data. Expect graphs, tables and experiments you have never seen, where you must state a claim, back it with evidence and explain the reasoning. You also get an equation and formula sheet, so spend your effort on understanding rather than memorizing formulas. Check the current course description, since the College Board can update details.

AP Biology units and approximate exam share
UnitExam share
1. Chemistry of Life8 to 11%
2. Cell Structure and Function10 to 13%
3. Cellular Energetics12 to 16%
4. Cell Communication and Cell Cycle10 to 15%
5. Heredity8 to 11%
6. Gene Expression and Regulation12 to 16%
7. Natural Selection13 to 20%
8. Ecology10 to 15%
Step by step
  1. 1Read the course and exam description and mark each unit topic red, yellow or green.
  2. 2Study one unit at a time, and for each process, such as photosynthesis, cell respiration or protein synthesis, draw it from memory and then check it.
  3. 3Make flashcards for vocabulary and for pairs you must tell apart, such as mitosis and meiosis or DNA and RNA.
  4. 4Practice graph and data questions: name the variables, describe the trend and state a claim the data supports.
  5. 5Write free-response answers, including experiment design with a hypothesis, variables, a control and a prediction, and score them with the official rubric.
  6. 6In the last weeks, drill weak units and take one or two full timed practice exams.
How StudyPDF helps

Do it on your own course

Upload your class notes, textbook chapters and lab handouts. StudyPDF builds flashcards, quizzes with sources and a timed practice exam from your own material, and labeled diagrams from your slides can become image-occlusion cards. It tracks which units you keep missing and drills those, and every answer links back to the page. A free account is needed, no card.

More questions

How long should I study for AP Biology?

Light review should run all year, since the exam covers the whole course. Focused prep usually starts six to eight weeks out and goes to free-response practice and your weakest units.

Do I need to memorize diagrams for AP Biology?

You need to understand processes well enough to draw them, such as cell respiration, photosynthesis and protein synthesis, and to read diagrams you have not seen before. Drawing from memory is the best check.
