How many questions are on the NREMT?
It depends on your level. The EMT exam is adaptive and asks 70 to 120 questions in 2 hours, 10 of them unscored. The AEMT exam has a fixed 135 questions in 3 hours, 35 unscored. The paramedic exam is adaptive with 110 to 150 questions in 3 and a half hours, 20 unscored. An adaptive exam stops once it can decide whether you pass.
In more detail
At the EMT and paramedic levels the NREMT uses a computer adaptive test. The number and difficulty of questions change from person to person, but the passing standard is the same for everyone. The more you get right, the harder the questions get, and the exam can end as soon as it is clear whether you have reached entry-level competency.
That is why the count tells you little about your result. The National Registry says there is no minimum percentage of correct answers needed to pass an adaptive exam, and a short exam does not mean you passed or failed. Unscored questions are mixed in and look just like scored ones, so treat every question as if it counts.
The EMR and EMT exams were updated on April 7, 2025. They now include technology-enhanced items such as build list, drag-and-drop and check-box questions next to multiple choice. The EMR exam has its own range, which you can find in the EMR candidate handbook.

| Level | Format | Questions | Unscored | Time limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EMT | Adaptive | 70 to 120 | 10 | 2 hours |

Step by step
- 1
Open the candidate handbook for your level and note the content areas and their weights. For the EMT exam, primary assessment is 39 to 43 percent.
- 2
Practice in timed sets and budget up to one minute per question, since the EMT limit is 120 questions in 2 hours.
- 3
Answer each question once and carefully. An adaptive exam does not let you go back and change an answer.
- 4
Try the official sample items from the National Registry to get used to the new question types.
- 5
Do not count questions during the exam. Put all your attention on the one in front of you.
- 6
After each practice set, review your misses by content area and go back to the source for the weak ones.
How StudyPDF helps
Upload your EMT course slides, notes or photos of the pages, and StudyPDF builds flashcards, quizzes and a timed practice exam in sections from them. Ask for scenario questions in the form's free-text field. It tracks which concepts you miss, and the Plan tab schedules sessions up to your test date. It uses your own material, has no official NREMT questions and does not copy the adaptive format.

More questions
Can you pass the NREMT with 70 questions?
Yes. A short exam only means the system reached a decision early, and that decision can be either result. The length alone says nothing about how you did.
What is the NREMT passing score?
There is no percentage to hit. If you do not pass, your report shows a score on a scale from 100 to 1500 with the passing point at 950. If you pass, you get no score.
