How long is the PSAT?
The PSAT/NMSQT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes of testing: 64 minutes of Reading and Writing and 70 minutes of Math. It has 98 questions in total, 54 in Reading and Writing and 44 in Math. Add a 10-minute break between the sections and the check-in at school, and plan on roughly 2 and a half to 3 hours for the whole morning.
The PSAT/NMSQT has the same shape as the digital SAT. Reading and Writing has two 32-minute modules of 27 questions, and Math has two 35-minute modules of 22 questions. The test is adaptive by module: how you do on the first module of a section decides whether the second one is easier or harder.
That works out to about 71 seconds per Reading and Writing question and about 95 seconds per Math question. Most questions are multiple choice, and some Math questions ask you to type in your own answer. You take it on a school day at your school, in the Bluebook testing app.
Students with approved extra time test longer: time and one-half comes to about 3 hours and 21 minutes of testing, and double time to about 4 hours and 28 minutes, plus breaks. The PSAT/NMSQT is scored from 320 to 1520, a slightly lower ceiling than the SAT's 1600.
