How long is the AP Human Geography exam?
The AP Human Geography exam is 2 hours 15 minutes long. Section I has 60 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour, and Section II has 3 free-response questions in 1 hour 15 minutes. Each section counts for 50% of your score. In 2027 the exam is on Monday, May 3, in the morning session, the first day of the AP testing window.
In more detail
Section I is all multiple choice: 60 questions in 60 minutes, so about one minute each. Many questions come with a map, chart, image or short text you read first, which is why that minute goes fast. Wrong answers are not penalized, so answer every question.
Section II is three free-response questions in 75 minutes, about 25 minutes each. Each one asks you to apply a concept to a real place or to data. A named concept with a specific example from a real place scores better than a general statement.
On the 2027 College Board schedule, Human Geography sits in Session 1 on Monday, May 3. Session 1 is typically the morning, and for most schools exams start at 8 a.m. local time. Your AP coordinator tells you where to report. Check-in and instructions come on top, and approved accommodations such as extended time make the sitting longer.

Step by step
- 1
Take one full practice exam in one sitting: 60 minutes of multiple choice, then 75 minutes of free response.
- 2
Pace multiple choice at about 1 minute per question, and flag any question that takes longer so you can return to it.
- 3
Read the map, chart or text first and the question second, because the stimulus often holds the answer.
- 4
Give each free-response question about 25 minutes, and answer every part with a named concept and a specific example.
- 5
Answer every multiple-choice question, since a wrong answer costs you nothing.
- 6
Check your practice answers against the official scoring guidelines and review the units behind your misses.
