How long is the AP European History exam?
The AP European History exam is 3 hours 15 minutes long. Section I has 55 multiple-choice questions in 55 minutes, then 3 short-answer questions in 40 minutes. Section II gives you 1 hour 40 minutes for two essays, the DBQ and the long essay. In 2027 the exam is on Tuesday, May 4, in Session 2, and you take all of it in the Bluebook app.
In more detail
Section I counts for 60% of your score: multiple choice is 40% and the short answers are 20%. Section II counts for the other 40%: the document-based question (DBQ) is 25% and the long essay (LEQ) is 15%. So the two essays take about half the time and carry as much weight as all 55 multiple-choice questions. Wrong answers are not penalized, so answer every question.
That works out to one minute per multiple-choice question and about 13 minutes per short answer. You answer all 3 short-answer questions, and they cover developments between 1450 and 2001, each from a different period. The recommended 60 minutes for the DBQ include a 15-minute reading period for its 7 documents, which leaves about 45 minutes to write. The long essay has 40 minutes, so plan 5 for an outline and 35 for writing.
The whole exam is digital: you read the questions and type every answer in Bluebook, essays included. In 2027 it is on Tuesday, May 4, in Session 2, usually the afternoon, and for most schools Session 2 starts at 12 p.m. local time. Check-in and instructions come on top of the 3 hours 15 minutes, and your AP coordinator tells you when and where to report. Approved accommodations such as extended time make the sitting longer.
