The options

Kahoot!

The simplest live quiz on one shared screen

Kahoot! is the classic live quiz. The host shows each question on the main screen and students answer on their own device. Ready-made content and templates make it quick to start.

Strengths

  • Quick to run: one screen and a game PIN are enough
  • Ready-made content, templates and a question bank are on the free plan
  • Paid plans add AI question creation from topics, links and files

Limits

  • The free plan caps players, and 50 players takes Bronze at $36 a year
  • AI question creation and bigger games sit behind the paid plans
Official site

Blooket

Arcade-style review games for younger classes

Blooket turns a question set into games such as tower defense or racing. A teacher hosts, students join on their own device, and the questions stay the same while the game changes.

Strengths

  • Many game modes, so the same question set feels new each week
  • Free accounts can host live games for up to 60 players
  • Students join from any browser, no app needed

Limits

  • Plus game modes, enhanced reports and 300-player games need Plus
  • Free homework deadlines stop at 14 days, Plus allows 365
  • Fits quick review better than checking deeper understanding
Official site

Gimkit

Strategy games for middle and high school

Gimkit is a live game show where right answers earn in-game cash that students spend on upgrades and power-ups. Gimkit Basic is free for educators.

Strengths

  • The strategy layer rewards answering well, not only answering fast
  • Basic plays featured modes with as many students as you want
  • Classes and reports are included on Basic

Limits

  • Basic has about three game modes at a time, the rest are Pro
  • Homework assignments and image or audio questions need Pro
Official site

Nearpod

Interactive lessons with quizzes inside, live or student-paced

Nearpod turns a lesson into an interactive session. Slides, polls, drawing tasks and quizzes sit in one lesson that you run live or students finish at their own pace. Time to Climb is its game-style quiz.

Strengths

  • The quiz is part of the lesson, not an add-on after it
  • Run it live, or let students work through it at their own pace, on the free plan too
  • A library of 22,000+ ready-made resources

Limits

  • The free Silver plan stops at 40 students per lesson and 300 MB
  • AI question creation, several sessions at once and more need Gold
  • More of a lesson builder than a quick quiz game
Official site

Quizlet

Flashcard sets, plus the Quizlet Live team game

Quizlet starts from study sets of terms and definitions. Quizlet Live turns a set into a team or solo game, and students keep using the same set for flashcards and practice later.

Strengths

  • Teams mode makes students talk, solo mode suits smaller groups
  • A big library of sets that other teachers already made
  • Plus for teachers adds class progress reports and Live customizations

Limits

  • Built around terms and definitions, so long multi-step questions fit less well
  • Reports, ad-free study and Live customizations need Plus for teachers

StudyPDF

That's us

Self-paced quizzes and practice tests from your own slides

StudyPDF is not a live game, so there is no PIN and no leaderboard. It does the part after class. Upload your slides, handouts or notes, and it builds quizzes, flashcards and practice exams that you check and edit. Share the course by one link that opens in any browser. On Free, 3 people can join one shared course and save their progress, on Pro 10 per course, on Ultra 30. Free to start, no card.

Strengths

  • Questions come from your own material and cite the page
  • One link per course opens in any browser. 3, 10 or 30 people per course can join and save progress on Free, Pro or Ultra
  • Each student sees which concepts they are still missing

Limits

  • No live hosted game, no PIN, no leaderboard
  • No library of ready-made quizzes, everything comes from your files

How to choose

  • Happy with how Quizizz works in your class? Staying on Wayground's free Basic plan is fine. It already runs live and student-paced quizzes.
  • Want a fast live game on one screen? Kahoot! is the simplest. Blooket suits younger classes and Gimkit older ones.
  • Want quizzes inside a full lesson with slides and polls? Nearpod runs it live or at each student's pace.
  • Starting from vocabulary or term lists? Use a Quizlet set, and Quizlet Live for a team game.
  • Want students to keep practicing your own material after class, with no live game? Build quizzes in StudyPDF and share the course by one link.

More on this

Teachers look for a Quizizz alternative for a few reasons. The name changed to Wayground and quizizz.com now redirects to wayground.com, so searches for the old name still land on the new product. Accounts, classes and join links carried over. The free Basic plan holds 100 students and 20 saved activities, with limited question types. The full plan is sold to schools and districts by quote, with no public price.

The picks below fall into four groups: live games (Kahoot!, Blooket, Gimkit), a lesson tool (Nearpod), set-based study (Quizlet) and a study tool for practice after class (StudyPDF). We checked free plans and prices on each vendor's own site on 16 October 2026. They change often, so check again before you pay.

One honest note: if Wayground's free Basic plan covers your class, staying is a fine answer. Every tool below gives something up in exchange, whether that is the student-paced mode, a lesson format or your own source material.

Questions and answers

What is the new Quizizz?

Quizizz is now called Wayground. The site moved from quizizz.com to wayground.com and the old links redirect. According to Wayground's help page, accounts, classes and resources carried over, and students can join at wayground.com/join or with the old joinmyquiz.com links.

What are the downsides of Quizizz?

On the free Basic plan, Wayground covers 100 students, stores 20 activities and offers limited question types. All 20+ question types, full AI grading and standards-aligned reports need the School and District plan, which is sold by quote with no public price (as of October 2026).

Which is better, Kahoot or Quizizz?

They suit different jobs. Kahoot! is the simpler live quiz on one shared screen, and its free Go plan has a small player cap. Wayground also runs live sessions, and adds student-paced homework and AI tools on the free Basic plan, which covers up to 100 students.

Which is better, Blooket or Quizizz?

Blooket is the more game-like tool, with arcade modes and live games for up to 60 players on the free plan. Wayground works more like a quiz and homework tool with game touches such as leaderboards and power-ups. Pick Blooket for review days and Wayground when you also want student-paced homework.

What is similar to Quizizz?

The closest matches are Kahoot!, Blooket and Gimkit for game-style quizzes, and Nearpod for quizzes inside lessons. For more live games, see our Kahoot alternatives and Blooket alternatives guides. StudyPDF is different: no live game, but quizzes built from your own material and shared by one link.
