GMAT Official Prep (GMAC)

Real questions and exams from the makers of the test

GMAC writes the GMAT and sells its own prep. The free Starter Kit gives you two adaptive practice exams that use the real scoring algorithm. More exams, question banks and the Official Guide cost money.

Strengths

  • The closest match to test day: real questions, real scoring algorithm
  • The Starter Kit is free: Practice Exams 1 and 2 plus 70+ official questions
  • Cheap: Exams 3 to 6 cost $107.99, the Official Guide with online bank $49.99 (975+ questions)

Limits

  • Little teaching: it shows you the test more than how to beat it
  • Only two exams are free, and the Premium bundle with everything is $299.99
Official site

Target Test Prep

Structured self-study with a daily plan, lessons and an AI coach

Target Test Prep is a self-study course with 1,500+ lessons, 4,000+ questions, 2,000+ video solutions, a personal study plan and an AI GMAT coach. OnDemand adds masterclass video for $1,299, live classes cost $1,799.

Strengths

  • A daily study plan and an error tracker show you what to do next
  • A 130-point score improvement guarantee on the Self-Study plans, see its terms
  • A custom test builder and AI-generated practice questions

Limits

  • Self-Study means text lessons and solution videos, lecture video comes with OnDemand
  • A month costs $249, so a long prep adds up (4 months is $799)
Official site

e-GMAT

A mentor, a very large question bank and adaptive mocks

e-GMAT sells one self-paced course in three lengths. Its site lists 250+ hours of video, 14,500+ practice questions, 15 full and 200 sectional mocks, three live sessions a week and a dedicated mentor. Some content is released on a schedule.

Strengths

  • One price for everything: video, questions, mocks and live sessions
  • A dedicated mentor who, per the vendor, answers within one business day
  • Question-adaptive full mocks with a gap analysis per sub-section

Limits

  • Some content is released on a schedule, so check what is open when you buy
  • Access ends after 2, 4 or 6 months
Official site

Magoosh

The lowest-priced full course, with a video for every question

Magoosh GMAT is a self-paced course with 200+ video lessons, 800+ practice questions, at least 2 diagnostic tests and a score predictor. Plans do not renew by themselves, and you can pay in 4 installments.

Strengths

  • Every practice question comes with a video explanation
  • An up-to-70-point score guarantee and a 7-day no-questions-asked refund
  • No auto-renewal, so there is nothing to cancel

Limits

  • Fewer questions than the big courses: 800+ against 4,000+ and 14,500+
  • Practice tests draw on the same question pool, Magoosh suggests making at most two

Manhattan Prep, powered by Kaplan, sells live online and in-person courses from $1,799, an On Demand video course from $299, a bootcamp from $2,899 and private tutoring with a live course from $3,499. Official practice tests and the Official Guide come with its courses.

Strengths

  • Live teaching and a schedule, if you learn better with structure
  • A higher-score guarantee: 655+ or +70 points on the $2,499 course, conditions apply
  • A free trial class to try before you pay

Limits

  • The live courses cost several times more than the self-paced ones
  • More than you need if your target is only a few points away

The Princeton Review

Adaptive drills, and your money back if your score does not rise

The Princeton Review sells a Self-Paced course ($799), Core Concepts with 18 hours of live teaching ($999), a GMAT Focus 645+ course with 30 hours live ($1,999) and private tutoring from $180 an hour. The self-paced course has video lessons and adaptive drills.

  • A money-back guarantee if your score does not go up, with terms
  • A cheaper live option: 18 hours of live teaching for $999

Limits

  • Read the guarantee terms before you rely on it
  • Live classes meet at set times, so check the dates first

StudyPDF

That's us

Cards and quizzes from your own notes, next to a real course

StudyPDF is not a GMAT course and has no official questions. Use it for the part courses skip: review. Write a short note on every Official Guide or practice exam question you miss, upload the notes with your course notes, and StudyPDF builds flashcards, quizzes and timed practice sets from them, then tracks which concepts keep costing you points. Pro and up export the cards to Anki. The free plan needs an account but no credit card.

Strengths

  • Cards and quizzes come from the misses you wrote down, not a generic deck
  • Anki export (.apkg) on Pro and up, for spaced review in Anki
  • Results per concept and a dated plan up to your test day

Limits

  • No official GMAT questions, no adaptive GMAT mocks and no score prediction
  • Weekly caps on every plan

How we picked

  • We started from what GMAT prep needs: official practice exams, a way to learn the methods, and regular review of what you keep missing.
  • Prices, free tiers and guarantees come from each vendor's own site, checked October 2026. Several sites run sales, so the price can be lower on the day.
  • We sort by use case, not by rank. Every option has a real strength and a real limit, StudyPDF included, and it is the only one here that is not a GMAT course.
  • We skip vendors' own best-course and number-one labels: they come from the vendors or from review sites with affiliate deals.
  • We left out tools whose price or content we could not confirm on their own site.

More on this

The GMAT Focus Edition has 64 questions in 2 hours 15 minutes: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, scored 205 to 805. It adapts to you as you go. Take the free official practice exam before you buy anything. Your score and your weakest section decide which course is worth the money. Manhattan Prep says most people study 2 to 6 months, and 4 to 6 if they want a jump of 200+ points or a 655+.

Official material and courses do different jobs. GMAC writes the test, so its questions and exams are the closest to test day, but they teach little. A course teaches the methods and gives you far more questions. A common split is one course for the learning and the official exams for the last weeks.

Week-by-week plan: studypdf.net/answers/how-to-study-for-the-gmat. How hard the test really is, with a percentile table: studypdf.net/answers/how-hard-is-the-gmat. StudyPDF is not a GMAT course, so it sits last on this list, as a way to review your own notes.

Questions and answers

What is the best prep course for the GMAT?

There is no single best one. Start with the free GMAC practice exams, then pick by how you learn: Target Test Prep or e-GMAT for deep self-study, Magoosh for the lowest price, Manhattan Prep or The Princeton Review for live classes.

Is 3 months enough to study for the GMAT?

For many people, yes. Manhattan Prep says most people study 2 to 6 months, and a jump of 200+ points or a 655+ usually takes 4 to 6. Take an official practice exam first: the gap to your target sets the time you need.

Can I score 700 on the GMAT in 1 month?

Only if you already score close to it on an official practice exam. Focus scores end in 5, so think 695 or 705. A 705 beats about 98 percent of test takers, and a jump that big takes longer than a month. With one month, drill official questions and keep an error log instead of starting a new course.

Is there a free GMAT prep course?

There is free prep, not a free full course. GMAC's Starter Kit has two full adaptive exams and 70+ questions. Target Test Prep gives a 5-day trial with no automatic billing, Magoosh a 7-day trial, Manhattan Prep a free trial class, and The Princeton Review a free practice test.
