What is a perfect ACT score?

A perfect ACT score is 36. Each section is scored from 1 to 36, and the Composite is the average of English, Math and Reading, rounded to the nearest whole number. You can still reach a Composite of 36 with a 35 in one section: 36, 36 and 35 average 35.67, which rounds up. Well under 1 percent of test takers get a 36.

In more detail

Science is optional and no longer counts toward the Composite (ACT removed it in 2025), so a 36 Composite depends only on English, Math and Reading. If you take Science, you get its own 1 to 36 score and a STEM score, the average of Math and Science. The optional Writing test is scored from 2 to 12 and does not change your Composite.

Rounding gives you a little room. 36, 36 and 35 average 35.67 and round up to 36, but 36, 35 and 35 average 35.33 and round down to 35. So you can be one point short in one section, not more. Your score is based on correct answers only, with no penalty for wrong ones, and the conversion from correct answers to a scale score differs a little between test forms. That is why the number of misses a 36 allows changes from test to test, and sometimes a section needs every answer right.

You do not have to get a 36 in one sitting. Your Superscore is the average of your best English, Math and Reading scores across all your test dates, so a 36 Composite can be built from several attempts. Check whether your colleges use the Superscore before you decide how often to retake.

Step by step

  1. 1

Take a full practice ACT and find your weakest of English, Math and Reading, since one low section pulls the average down.

  2. 2

Sort every miss: a content gap, a careless slip or a timing problem.

  3. 3

Close the content gaps with flashcards and practice questions on exactly those topics, such as grammar rules in English or functions and geometry in Math.

  4. 4

Practice at test pace, so that speed is not what separates a 35 from a 36.

  5. 5

Retake the test if you are close, and use the Superscore if your colleges accept it.

  6. 6

Look up your colleges' middle 50 percent range so you know when a higher score stops paying off.

How StudyPDF helps

StudyPDF does not give you an official ACT score. It helps you close the gaps behind it. Upload pages from your ACT prep book, your class notes or a practice test you already took, and StudyPDF builds flashcards, quizzes and a timed practice exam from them, and tracks which topics you keep missing so the next quiz goes after them. A free account needs no card.

More questions

How rare is a 36 on the ACT?

Well under 1 percent of test takers. Estimates vary by year, from about one tenth of 1 percent to half of 1 percent.

Do you need a 36 in every section for a 36 Composite?

No. Because the Composite is rounded, 36, 36 and 35 still gives you a 36. Two sections at 35 and one at 36 gives you a 35.
