Is a 2.8 GPA good?
A 2.8 GPA is a little below average. It sits between a B- (2.7) and a B (3.0), about 80 to 82 percent on the US 4.0 scale. It passes and keeps you in good standing, but it falls short of the 3.0 that many scholarships and grad programs ask for, and of the commonly cited US average of about 3.1. It is easy to raise early on.
In more detail
What is a 2.8 GPA? It is mostly B's and B-'s. A mix reaches it too: four B's and one C average exactly 2.8, and so do two A's and three C's, so you do not need to be steady in every class.
Is it good enough? To graduate and stay in good standing, yes, because the usual line is 2.0. A 2.8 meets the 2.75 that some majors with entry cutoffs, such as nursing, education and business, ask for, but misses the 3.0 that most merit scholarships and grad programs use. In high school, a 2.8 keeps four-year college open, mainly at less selective and open-admission schools, and community college with a later transfer is a common route. Strong test scores and a rising trend in your last two years help.
The gap to 3.0 is smaller than it looks. The same number of credits at a 3.2 brings a 2.8 up to 3.0 at any point: after 30 credits at 2.8, a year of 3.2 (30 more credits) lands you at 3.0.
Where a 2.8 GPA stands
| Goal | Usual GPA bar | Does a 2.8 meet it? |
|---|---|---|
| Graduate and keep good standing | 2.0 | Yes, by 0.8 |
| Transfer to many colleges | Often 2.0 to 3.0 | Often, depends on the school |
| Majors with entry cutoffs (nursing, education, business) | Often 2.75 to 3.0 | Sometimes, just above the low end |
| Merit scholarships | 3.0 and up | Usually not, 0.2 short |
| Grad programs | 3.0 minimum | Usually not, a rising trend helps |
Step by step
- 1
Work out the gap. The same number of credits at a 3.2 takes a 2.8 to 3.0, so aim for B+ grades from now on.
- 2
Start with the classes that carry the most credits, since they move the average most.
- 3
Ask your advisor whether you can retake your lowest grades and how your school counts a retake.
- 4
Study with practice questions and spaced review instead of re-reading, and go to office hours in week three, not week ten.
- 5
Look up the exact GPA line of the scholarship or program you want and measure yourself against that number, not a general one.
How StudyPDF helps
StudyPDF does not calculate your GPA. It helps with the part that moves it, your grades. Upload your lectures, slides and notes to a free account (no card needed), press New material and pick flashcards, a quiz or a practice exam built from your own pages. Bo, the tutor, answers from your material with citations and shows you which concepts you still miss.

More questions
Is a 2.8 GPA good enough for college admission?
For many colleges, yes, mainly less selective and open-admission schools. Selective colleges usually admit higher averages. Good test scores and a rising trend in your last two years help.
Is a 2.8 GPA good enough for grad school?
It is harder. Most grad programs ask for a 3.0 minimum, though some accept a lower overall GPA if your last two years, test scores or work experience are strong. Ask the program directly.
