How do you study for the DAT?

Give yourself a few months and split your prep by section. Review biology, general chemistry and organic chemistry first, then move into practice questions. Train the Perceptual Ability Test with daily timed drills, because it is a skill, not a memory task. Practice reading and math under time limits, and take full-length practice tests in the last weeks, reviewing every miss.

The Dental Admission Test has four sections, and each needs a different kind of practice, so one plan of rereading notes will not work. Check the current format and registration details on the official DAT page of the American Dental Association before you set your dates.

Content is learned, but the Perceptual Ability Test and your timing are trained. Do a few PAT drills every day, even while you are deep in chemistry, and take timed sections early so you know your pace. For the sciences, build flashcards as you go so the facts and reactions do not pile up unreviewed.

In the final weeks, switch to full-length practice tests and spend a day reviewing each one. Look at wrong answers and at lucky guesses, and sort them into content gaps and timing problems.

The four DAT sections and how to train them
SectionWhat it testsHow to train
Survey of Natural SciencesBiology, general chemistry, organic chemistryContent review, flashcards, question sets by topic
Perceptual Ability TestSpatial reasoning with 2D and 3D shapesDaily timed drills on each task type
Reading ComprehensionReading dense science passages quicklyTimed passages, then review every miss
Quantitative ReasoningMath and word problemsTimed problem sets, and checking how you set each one up
Step by step
  1. 1Check the current DAT format and choose a test date.
  2. 2Review biology, general chemistry and organic chemistry, one topic at a time.
  3. 3Make flashcards for facts, reactions and formulas, and review them daily.
  4. 4Do Perceptual Ability drills every day with a timer.
  5. 5Practice reading passages and quantitative sets under time limits.
  6. 6Take full-length practice tests in the final weeks and review each miss in detail.
How StudyPDF helps

Do it on your own course

Upload your biology, chemistry and organic chemistry notes, textbook chapters or slides, and StudyPDF turns them into flashcards, quizzes and a timed practice exam from your own material, and tracks the concepts you keep missing. It cannot train the Perceptual Ability Test, which needs dedicated shape drills, so pair it with a PAT tool.

More questions

How long should you study for the DAT?

Many students plan a few months of steady study, but it depends on how recently you took the science courses. Let your practice test scores guide when to book your date.

Which DAT section is hardest?

It varies by person. Many find the Perceptual Ability Test unfamiliar because it tests a skill most courses never train, while others struggle most with the speed needed for Reading Comprehension.

Are flashcards good for the DAT?

Yes for the sciences, where there are many facts and reactions. They do not train the PAT or reading speed, so use drills and timed sets for those.
