How do you study for Security+?
Start with the official CompTIA exam objectives for the version you will sit, and study by domain, giving the most time to security operations, which is 28% of SY0-701. Spend about a week per domain, do practice questions after each one, and drill the acronyms from the objectives. Book the exam when your mixed practice tests sit well above the passing score of 750 on the 100 to 900 scale.
In more detail
Security+ is CompTIA's cybersecurity certification. When this page was last checked, in October 2026, the current exam was V7 (SY0-701): a maximum of 90 questions, multiple choice and performance-based, in 90 minutes, with a passing score of 750 on a scale of 100 to 900. CompTIA says V7 retires in English on June 11, 2027, and expects V8 (SY0-801) on or around November 17, 2026. Download the objectives for the version on your booking.
The five domains carry different weights, so split your time to match. Security operations is the biggest at 28% in V7, and threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations comes next at 22%. V8 shifts the weights a little and adds AI-related risks, but security operations stays the largest, so the plan below works for both versions.
Expect scenario questions where several answers look right and one is best, so after every practice question read why each wrong option is wrong. The performance-based questions are hands-on simulations, so practice the tasks themselves: reading a log, setting a firewall rule, tracing an attack back to the control that would have stopped it.
Security+ domain weights, V7 and V8 (CompTIA, October 2026)
| Domain | V7 (SY0-701) | V8 (SY0-801) |
|---|---|---|
| General security concepts | 12% | 16% |
| Threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations (V8: attacks) | 22% | 24% |
| Security architecture | 18% | 19% |
| Security operations | 28% | 27% |
| Security program management and oversight | 20% | 14% |
Step by step
- 1
Download the objectives from CompTIA for the version on your booking, and turn each bullet into a checklist.
- 2
Study one domain a week in the order of the objectives, taking notes in your own words.
- 3
After each domain, do 20 to 30 practice questions and read why every wrong option is wrong.
- 4
Make flashcards for acronyms, control types, protocols and ports, and review them every day.
- 5
Practice the hands-on tasks: read a log, write a firewall rule, trace an attack from the symptoms to the control that stops it.
- 6
In the last week, take full 90-question practice tests in 90 minutes, and book the exam once you pass with room to spare.
How StudyPDF helps
Upload your Security+ course slides, study notes or the objectives document, and StudyPDF builds flashcards, quizzes and a timed practice exam from them, split by topic, with every answer linked to the page it came from. Every answer updates your mastery per concept, so the next quiz goes after the domains you still miss, and the plan spreads your sessions up to your exam date. StudyPDF is not affiliated with CompTIA. The free plan covers about 4 materials a week, no card needed.

More questions
How long does it take to study for Security+?
Plan for about six weeks if you study an hour or two a day: five weeks for the five domains and one for mixed practice tests. People with a networking background often need less, and people new to IT often need more. CompTIA lists Network+ and two years of security or systems administration experience as recommended, not required.
Should I take SY0-701 or wait for SY0-801?
When this page was last checked, CompTIA listed V7 (SY0-701) as retiring in English on June 11, 2027 and V8 (SY0-801) as expected on or around November 17, 2026. If you will be ready within weeks, V7 is fine. If you are starting from zero, study for the version you will actually sit, and confirm dates and objectives on CompTIA's site before you book.
