How long is the NCLEX?
The NCLEX gives you up to 5 hours, and that includes the tutorial and any breaks. The limit is the same for the RN and the PN. Most people finish much sooner: in 2025 the average first-time, US-educated candidate took 2 hours 14 minutes on the RN and 2 hours 18 minutes on the PN. The exam stops when the computer is sure of your result, after 85 to 150 questions.
In more detail
There is no timer per question, only one clock for the whole exam. Five hours for up to 150 questions works out to about 2 minutes per question even in the longest case. Optional breaks are offered after 2 hours and again after 3.5 hours. The clock keeps running during a break, and the tutorial counts toward the 5 hours too.
The exam can end in three ways. After 85 questions, it stops as soon as the computer is 95% sure you are clearly above or below the passing standard. At 150 questions it stops no matter what and uses your final ability estimate. If time runs out first, you fail if you answered fewer than 85 questions, and otherwise your answers so far decide. For the question counts, see the page on how many questions are on the NCLEX.
Your appointment is longer than the exam. Plan to arrive early for check-in and the ID check, so the clock does not start on a rushed morning. A short exam does not mean you passed, and a long one does not mean you failed, so do not read anything into the time you used.

Step by step
- 1
Plan the whole day: arrive early for check-in, then expect up to 5 hours of testing.
- 2
Practice at a steady pace of about 1 to 2 minutes per question, and give case studies a little more.
- 3
Build up to at least one full session of 150 questions in 5 hours.
- 4
Decide before test day whether you will take the optional breaks at 2 hours and 3.5 hours.
- 5
If a question stumps you, choose the best answer and move on. You cannot go back to earlier questions.
- 6
When the screen ends, do not read anything into the number of questions or the time used.
How StudyPDF helps
Upload your nursing lecture slides and notes, and StudyPDF builds a practice exam from them with the number of questions and the timer you choose, so you can rehearse the pace of a 5-hour sitting. The graded report shows your result per section, and the concepts you miss feed your next quiz. The questions come from your own material, not from real NCLEX items. More questions
Is the NCLEX-PN shorter than the NCLEX-RN?
No. Both exams have 85 to 150 questions and the same 5-hour limit. In 2025 the average first-time, US-educated candidate took 2 hours 14 minutes on the RN and 2 hours 18 minutes on the PN.
Do breaks count toward the 5 hours?
Yes. The 5 hours include the tutorial and any breaks you take, so the clock keeps running while you rest.
