Word to flashcards: what you actually get

Add a .docx file to a StudyPDF course and the text is read and sorted into topics and concepts. Then you open New material, choose Flashcards, pick how many cards you want and how hard, and you get a deck. Each card carries a citation to the passage of your document it came from.

The Word file does not disappear into a one-off converter. It becomes a source in your course, so you can check a card against the original, ask Bo about the topic, and build a quiz from the same document. You need a free account, no credit card.

What one study guide turns into

Say you wrote a 15 page Word document on cell respiration: headings for glycolysis, the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain, a table of inputs and outputs, and a list of key terms. Once it is read, the course shows those topics and the concepts under them.

You choose Flashcards, set the scope to the whole document, ask for 30 cards at medium difficulty and start the build. A card might ask where the Krebs cycle takes place, with the answer on the back and a citation to the section where you wrote it. The cards carry concept tags, so a weak spot shows up as a concept, not just a wrong card.

Which Word documents work best

Text-heavy documents work best: lecture notes, a study guide, an outline, reading notes, a summary you wrote after class, or training material. Clear headings and short paragraphs help, because the headings tell StudyPDF what each part is about.

If you have the slides for the same class, add them to the same course. A card can then draw on your notes and the slides together. A Google Doc works once you download it as .docx.

Free takes files up to 200 pages, which covers most notes. Longer documents need a higher plan, or you can split them by chapter.

What it will not do

It reads your document, it does not improve it. If a Word file is vague, half finished or full of shorthand only you understand, the cards will be thin. Tidy the notes first, or tell the form what to focus on.

Tables, formulas and text inside screenshots are the places to check. A table with real text usually works, but read the cards built from it. A password protected file cannot be read, so remove the password before you upload. Tracked changes and comments in the margin can add noise, so accept or clear them first to build cards from the final text.

And no tool writes perfect cards. Look through the deck once, delete the weak ones and fix the wording. That takes a few minutes, not an evening.

Flashcards in Word, a converter, or StudyPDF

You can make flashcards in Word by hand: set a small page size, type the term on one page and the answer on the next, and print double sided. For ten cards that is perfectly fine. For a hundred it is an evening, and the cards cannot be shuffled or rated.

A one-off Word to flashcards converter is the fastest route from a file to a deck. You upload, you get cards, you are done in a minute. For one document you only need once, that is often enough, and several are free.

StudyPDF takes a step more and does a different job. It keeps the document in a course, cites the passage for each card, tags the cards with concepts, lets you ask follow-up questions, and turns the same file into a quiz or a summary. Use a quick converter when you need cards from one file. Use StudyPDF when you will be tested on the whole course.

Try it on your next set of notes

Add one Word file and open Flashcards. It takes a couple of minutes and a free account, no credit card. Free gives you about 4 materials a week.

If it helps, add the slides and the rest of your notes to the same course. To study in Anki, export the deck on Pro. To study on paper, print the fold-over sheet, which works on every plan.

Try it on your own material

Upload your notes, slides or readings and see it work on your own course.

What you get from one Word file

A converter gives you a list of cards. A course gives you cards you can check, study and take with you.

  • Count, difficulty and scope are yours to set before the cards are made
  • Every card is tagged with the concept it tests
  • Slides and other notes for the same class sit in the same course

Questions and answers

How do I turn a Word document into flashcards?

Add the .docx file to a StudyPDF course. Once it is read, open New material and choose Flashcards. Set the number of cards, the difficulty and the scope, and you get a deck where each card cites the passage it came from.

Does it work with .doc and .docx files?

Yes. StudyPDF takes both .docx and the older .doc format. If your notes are in Google Docs or Pages, export them as .docx first.

How do I make flashcards in Word myself?

Set a small page size such as 6 by 4 inches in landscape, type the term on one page and the answer on the next, and print on both sides. It works for a short list. For a long document, upload it and let StudyPDF write the cards.

5 more questions

Is there a free Word to flashcards tool?

You can start free. You need a free account, no credit card. Free gives you about 4 materials a week, and Pro gives you more.

Can I export the flashcards back to Word?

Yes, on Pro and up. A deck exports as an editable Word file, and also to Anki as an .apkg file with math intact. On every plan, Free included, you can print it as a PDF fold-over sheet.

Can ChatGPT or Copilot make flashcards from a Word document?

A general chatbot can write cards from text you paste in or attach, but the cards stay in that chat and do not point back to your document. StudyPDF keeps the file in your course and cites the passage behind each card.

How long can the Word document be?

Free takes files up to 200 pages. Pro and Ultra take longer ones. For a very long document you can also pick one topic as the scope and make the deck in parts.

What about tables, images and formulas in my document?

Text in tables usually works. Check any card built from a table, a formula or a screenshot, since those are the likeliest places for a mistake. Adding the original slides to the same course can help.
