How to make accounting practice problems from your textbook

The quickest way to get accounting practice problems that match your class is to build them from your own textbook chapter. Upload your slides or chapter to a course in StudyPDF and make a quiz. You get problems on journal entries, adjusting entries and ratios, each with the right answer, an explanation that shows the steps and the page it came from.

  1. Upload the slides, notes or chapter photos for the unit you are on.
  2. Press New material and pick Quiz. Choose the chapters, the number of questions and the difficulty.
  3. Tick the question types, for example multiple choice for picking the entry and short answer for writing it.
  4. Take it with instant feedback, then open the results screen to see your weakest concepts.
  5. Before the exam, download a blank worksheet with the answer key, or make a timed practice exam.

Three sample problems from an accounting chapter

Say your chapter covers adjusting entries, depreciation and liquidity ratios. A quiz built from it could include problems like these. They were written for this page to show the format.

  • Problem 1, adjusting entry

    Question
On March 1 a company pays $2,400 for a 12-month insurance policy and records it in Prepaid Insurance. Which adjusting entry does it make on March 31?
    Choices
    A) Debit Insurance Expense $200, credit Prepaid Insurance $200; B) Debit Prepaid Insurance $200, credit Insurance Expense $200; C) Debit Insurance Expense $2,400, credit Prepaid Insurance $2,400; D) Debit Insurance Expense $600, credit Prepaid Insurance $600
    Answer
    A
    Explanation
$2,400 ÷ 12 = $200 a month. One month of cover has been used, so $200 moves from the asset to an expense. B reverses the entry, C expenses the whole premium and D counts three months.
  • Problem 2, ratios

    Question
A company has current assets of $90,000, of which $30,000 is inventory, and current liabilities of $60,000. Find the current ratio and the quick ratio.
    Model answer
Current ratio 1.5, quick ratio 1.0.
    Explanation
$90,000 ÷ $60,000 = 1.5. The quick ratio leaves out inventory: ($90,000 − $30,000) ÷ $60,000 = 1.0. Some books count only cash, receivables and securities in the quick ratio, so use the definition from your own chapter. Short answers are self-graded, so you compare yours with the model answer.
  • Problem 3, depreciation

    Question
A company buys equipment on July 1 for $12,000. The salvage value is $2,000, the useful life is 5 years and it uses straight-line depreciation. What is the depreciation expense for the year ending December 31?
    Model answer
    $1,000.
    Explanation
($12,000 − $2,000) ÷ 5 = $2,000 a year, and the equipment was held for 6 of 12 months, so $1,000. Some courses round to whole months or use a half-year convention, and your chapter decides which.

Your own problems use the examples and the account names from your chapter, in your professor's wording, and each one shows the page it came from. When a page holds a table, such as a trial balance, it can appear right inside the question.

What the problems cover, and what they do not

The problems cover what a question, a choice or a short answer can carry: journal entries, adjusting entries for prepaid expenses and accruals, depreciation, financial statement items, financial ratios and, if your chapter has them, inventory methods and bank reconciliations.

There are limits. It is not accounting software or a calculator, and nothing checks an entry or a number you type in. A task like prepare an adjusted trial balance or draw the T-accounts for a whole ledger is better done on paper from your book, and a quiz asks about the parts of it. The numbers are worked out by an AI, so check them against the explanation and your own working before you trust them. A generated quiz is also smaller than a large static problem bank, and it only covers topics your material covers.

Before the exam: a blank worksheet, a timed exam and a mastery score

A quiz gives feedback after every question. To work on paper, download it as a blank worksheet with the answer key on its own page. For exam conditions, make a practice exam from the same chapters: sections, an optional timer and no feedback until you submit, then a graded report with the result per section.

Every answer feeds a mastery score per concept, so the second round can aim at whatever you keep missing, for example accruals against ratios. From the same chapter you can also make flashcards for accounts and terms and a cheat sheet for the formulas.

Generated problems or a free problem set?

Free problem sets, shared documents and videos are good for volume, and many show every step. Some check a typed answer for you, which StudyPDF does not. But they are written once for everyone, so the order, the account names and the standards may differ from your class, and you decide what to practice yourself.

Problems built from your chapter follow your syllabus and show the page they came from, so a wrong answer sends you straight to the explanation. The two work well together: a large bank for volume on one skill, and a quiz from your own chapter for what your exams test.

What to look for in accounting practice problems

Problems should follow your course, not a generic worksheet. Books differ in account names, in how they set up adjusting entries and in which standard they teach. StudyPDF splits your chapters into concepts and writes each problem from the passage it came from, so the problems follow your syllabus.

Write the entry before you look at the choices. In accounting the structure is the point: which accounts, which side, which amount. Every problem shows the steps and where to read more in your material. Got one wrong? Ask Bo, the tutor in your course, why. He knows which question you mean.

Mix the question types. Multiple choice checks that you can spot the right entry, multi-select asks for every correct statement, matching pairs each account with its meaning, and short answer makes you write the entry or work out the number and compare it with a model answer.

Track concepts, not just scores. Every answer feeds a mastery score per concept, and the results screen lists the weakest first. Ask Bo what to practice next and the quiz form opens with those concepts already picked.

Questions and answers

Where can I find accounting practice problems with answers?

Textbooks, free quiz sites, video channels and shared documents all have them, and they are fixed sets. StudyPDF writes new ones from your own textbook chapter or slides, each with the answer, an explanation and the page it came from. You can make another set whenever you finish one.

Can AI make accounting practice problems?

Yes, for problems that fit a choice or a short answer: journal entries, adjusting entries, depreciation, financial ratios and, if your chapter has them, inventory methods or bank reconciliations. StudyPDF builds them from your chapter, so they follow your course. It is not accounting software, and it does not check an entry or a number you type in.

How do I practice journal entries?

Write the entry yourself before you look at any choices: which accounts, debit or credit, and the amount. Then compare it with the model answer and the explanation. Multiple choice checks that you can spot the right entry, and a short answer makes you write it out.

5 more questions

Are there accounting practice problems and solutions I can print?

Yes. Download the quiz as a PDF, either with the solutions or as a blank worksheet with the answer key on its own page. Print the blank one, work through it on paper, then turn to the answer page.

Does it grade my journal entries or numbers?

No. Multiple choice, multi-select, true or false and matching are checked as you go. A short answer, an entry or a number included, is self-graded: you write it, then compare it with the model answer and mark it right, partly right or wrong. Do the arithmetic on paper and check it against the working.

How do I practice adjusting entries and financial ratios?

Pick those topics in the New material form or type them in the free-text field, for example prepaid expenses, accruals and the current ratio. Set up each entry or formula yourself first, then open the explanation. The results screen then shows whether adjusting entries or ratios are your weaker concept.

Are the accounting practice problems free?

Free to start. You need a free account, no card. Free gives you about 4 materials a week and Pro about 35.

Does it work for financial accounting, managerial accounting or the CPA exam?

It makes problems from whatever you upload, such as your own chapter, slides or notes, so it fits any of them. It does not contain official CPA exam questions or an official question bank, and the rules it follows are the ones in your material, for example US GAAP or IFRS.
