What the MCAT is and how it is scored
The MCAT is written and administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges. It has four scored sections: Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, and Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. Each section is scored on a scale from 118 to 132, so the total runs from 472 to 528, and 500 sits at the scaled midpoint of that range. There is no passing score. The AAMC publishes percentile ranks for each score, and every medical school decides for itself what it wants to see, so the only useful benchmark is the score profile of the schools you plan to apply to.

The format is long. Each of the three science sections gives you 59 questions in 95 minutes, and the reasoning section gives you 53 questions in 90 minutes, which puts total seated time at roughly seven and a half hours once breaks and check-in are counted. Most questions hang off a passage, with a smaller set of standalone discrete questions in the science sections only. Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer, so a blank is always worse than a guess. Test day rules, break structure, scheduling and fee assistance do change, so confirm the current details at students-residents.aamc.org rather than trusting a number you read in a forum.
How to use this sampler
The 15 questions below follow the exam's own balance in miniature. Five come from the biological and biochemical foundations, four from the chemical and physical foundations, three from the psychological and social foundations of behavior, and three are critical analysis and reasoning items. Each reasoning item carries its own short excerpt, written by us in the register that section uses, so you can practice the skill without hunting for a passage first. The real exam uses single answer multiple choice only, so the select all that apply and fill in the blank items here are a study device rather than a format preview. They are in the mix because committing to every part of an answer exposes gaps that four tidy choices can hide. None of these are real exam items, and none of them are medical guidance. This is exam practice, nothing more.
Take it in one sitting without notes, then read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right. On the MCAT a lucky guess and a reasoned answer look identical on the score report and completely different in your head, so the review is where the learning happens. Treat a miss as a topic rather than a fact. If you dropped the osmotic pressure question and the thermodynamics question, the problem is probably that you are memorizing equations instead of reading what each variable actually stands for.
After this, split your study time honestly. Content review closes gaps, but score movement usually comes from full-length timed tests and from reviewing them slowly. The reasoning section is the exception, since it rewards steady daily reading of dense argumentative prose more than any content list. Timing is its own skill. Ninety-five minutes for 59 questions leaves you a little over a minute and a half each, and most people bleed points at the end of a section rather than the start, so once the content is solid, practice against the clock instead of untimed.
