Interleaving
Interleaving means mixing different topics or problem types in one study session instead of grinding through one type at a time. It feels harder while you do it, but it trains your brain to spot which kind of problem you're actually facing.
Most people study in blocks. Ten algebra problems, then ten geometry problems, then a break. It feels smooth because once you're in algebra mode, every problem looks the same. The catch is the exam doesn't come in blocks. It mixes everything up, and suddenly you can't tell which method to use.
Interleaving fixes that. You shuffle the topics so each problem might be a different type. Your brain has to stop and ask "what is this one?" before solving it. That extra step feels slower and a bit frustrating, but it's the exact skill a test checks. Studies show interleaved students often score much higher on later tests than students who studied in blocks.
One thing to know: when a topic is brand new, do a short focused block first to get the basics. Once you sort of get it, start mixing. Interleaving pays off most when you already have a little familiarity with each topic.
Mia has a chemistry test on three reaction types. Instead of doing all the type-A problems, then all type-B, she shuffles them so she never knows which one is next. The first round feels rough and she gets a few wrong. But on test day she can finally tell the types apart fast, because that's exactly what she practiced.
