What is a good ASVAB score?
A good ASVAB score is an AFQT of 50 or higher, which means average or better and puts you in Category IIIA or better. The minimum to enlist is lower: the Army and the Air Force both list 31 for high school graduates, and the Air Force lists 50 for GED holders. Scores of 65 and up (Categories I and II) give you the widest choice of jobs.
When people say ASVAB score, they usually mean the AFQT score. It is a percentile from 1 to 99 built from four subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. A 50 means you did as well as or better than 50% of a national sample of 18 to 23 year olds. So 50 is average, not a pass mark.
Each branch sets its own minimum, and minimums can change with recruiting needs. As of October 2026, goarmy.com and airforce.com both list 31 for high school graduates, and airforce.com lists 50 for GED holders. For the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Space Force, get the current number from a recruiter, because published figures differ.
The AFQT only gets you in the door. Your job options come from line scores, which combine other subtests such as General Science, Mechanical Comprehension and Electronics Information. A technical job can need high line scores even when your AFQT is fine, so ask which line scores your target jobs need.
| Category | AFQT score | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| I | 93 to 99 | Exceptional |
| II | 65 to 92 | Well above average |
| IIIA | 50 to 64 | Average to above average |
| IIIB | 31 to 49 | Below average, meets the Army and Air Force minimum for graduates |
| IVA to IVC | 10 to 30 | Low, enlistment is very limited |
| V | 1 to 9 | Not eligible to enlist |
- 1Ask a recruiter for the minimum AFQT and the line scores your target jobs need.
- 2Take a timed practice test and note your result on each of the four AFQT subtests.
- 3Work on the weakest one first. Math often moves fastest with daily word problems done by hand, since calculators are not allowed.
- 4Learn 10 to 15 new words a day with flashcards for Word Knowledge.
- 5Add the subtests behind your job's line scores, such as Mechanical Comprehension.
- 6Retake a practice test every one to two weeks to track your progress before the real test.
