How much does the GRE cost?

The GRE General Test costs $249 in most of the world and $237.86 in China, since ETS raised the price from $220 on August 1, 2026. The fee includes four free score recipients. Rescheduling or changing your test center costs $55, and each extra score report costs $40. A fee reduction voucher brings the General Test down to $100 if you have financial need.

In more detail

The $249 is per attempt. Retaking the test means paying it again, and ETS lets you test once every 21 days, up to five times in any rolling 12 months. Some older prep sites, and even a few ETS pages, still show $220. The fees page, effective August 1, 2026, is the one that counts. In several countries, including the US, Canada and the EU, taxes are added to the order when you pay.

The extras are small but they add up. Rescheduling and changing your test center each cost $55. Every score report beyond your four free recipients costs $40, and you choose those four on test day. A review of your Analytical Writing score costs $60 and reinstating a canceled score costs $50. Plan your date and your schools before you book and you can skip all of these.

You may not have to pay full price. ETS runs a Fee Reduction Program: with a voucher, the General Test costs $100 and you also get POWERPREP PLUS practice tests 1 and 2 and ScoreItNow! writing practice, a $100 value. You qualify if you are a US citizen or resident alien and a college senior on financial aid with a Student Aid Index of zero or less, an unenrolled graduate who applied for aid, recently unemployed and receiving benefits, or a Peace Corps volunteer. Members of partner programs such as QuestBridge or McNair also get vouchers through their coordinator. The voucher number arrives by email within 2 weeks of approval, so ask early.
